OS becomes a stuttery mess when connected to multiple displays

I have a laptop with hybrid graphics specced with an i7-8750H and a GTX 1050. I am using Gnome on Xorg as my DE of choice (Xorg because I use nvidia prime for some applications). When I use my laptop normally, it is very snappy. But when I connect it to an external display, it becomes a stuttery mess. It seems to go back to normal when I mirror both my displays, but if I switch back to extend displays, or close my laptop and try to use just the external display, it lags so much, it is unusable. I couldn't find any information on this on the forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
