installing the Intel CPU OpenCL runtime

Hi. I have an AMD Ryzen 3 2200G. Since `hashcat` gives a segmentation fault on the `amdapp-sdk` AMD CPU OpenCL runtime, I was advised on the `hashcat` forum to install the Intel CPU OpenCL runtime. However, installing `intel-opencl-runtime` adds nothing to the output of `clinfo --list`:

>clinfo --list
Platform #0: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing
 `-- Device #0: gfx902+xnack

The `gfx` device is a GPU and is provided by `rocm-opencl-runtime`. Have I installed the correct package? The wiki says it supports non-Intel CPUs.

amdapp-sdk hasn't seen a new release since 2016 , your cpu is probably too new for it.

No idea how well intel-opencl-runtime supports non-intel systems, but there are 2 other options I would try first : opencl-mesa and opencl-amd .(Actually I would have tried with those 2 before even considering rocm or amdapp-sdk ).

For now I suggest to remove amdapp-sdk , rocm and intel-opencl-runtime .

Then test mesa-opencl .

I did what you have told me. `opencl-mesa` shows only GPUs. `hashcat` complains that this driver is unstable and does not start a computation.

If I run `hashcat` with `--force`, it just hangs. `radeontop` shows that the shader interpolator is doing some work, but the computation does not end. I give `hashcat` just 10 passwords to check, it should not be that long.

`opencl-amd` leads to the error “amdgpu_device_initialize: DRM version is 2.50.0 but this driver is only compatible with 3.x.x.”. If I blacklist the `radeon` module, `clinfo --list` and `hashcat` give a segmentation fault without any output.

That suggests something is wrong on a lower level .

Post full output of

$ lspci -k
$ glxinfo -B # comes with mesa-demos

Also journalcltl -b (run as root ) and xorg log .

Indeed low level issues, though not of  a kind I expected.

Your system has a modern amd videochipset integrated in your ryzen processor , but you also have a discrete amd videocard using the much older TURKS XT chipset.
They also use different kernel modules .

opencl-mesa should be able to support both chipsets , opencl-amd & rocm runtime are only usable by the modern chipset .

https://man.archlinux.org/man/libOpenCL.7 does show  a possible solution : OCL_ICD_DEFAULT_PLATFORM .

Maybe you can use that to get opencl-amd to skip the TURKS card and use the modern one.
Will hashcat honor that setting ? no clue, but seems worth a shot.

The simplest solution is probably to remove the discrete card from the system.


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Blacklisting a kernel module only prevents loading it directly, that module can still be pulled in by something else.

There is however a "hackish" way to block a kernel module completely.

I checked with `lsmod` that the `radeon` module was not loaded. Anyway, I tried with the discrete videocard Asus Radeon HD 6670 removed and got the same error.

Having more than one AMD videocard is inevitable if having more than one seat. NVIDIA simply hates Linux. In the past, there were many times when a NVIDIA driver did not fit the newest kernel, so I was forced to use an old kernel.

BTW, some of them have debug symbols up to the segmentation fault. I suppose that the AMD binary drivers with debug symbols are available somewhere.

Some discussion suggested that this is a limitation of BIOS. The BIOS version in my MSI B450-A Pro was quite old (7B86vA4 (2018-12-26)), so I updated it to the latest 7B86vAG1 (Beta version). To my surprise, the AMDGPU driver in the Xorg server said “No devices detected” :-( ; the Linux console and Windows worked fine though. By continuous degrading, I found the latest BIOS version which the AMDGPU driver can work with, 7B86vA7 (2019-03-07). While MSI says that 7B86vA8 does not support Bristol Ridge, my AMD Ryzen 3 2200G has Raven Ridge. Also MSI forbid flashing BIOSes older than 7B86vA7. I was this close to having an unusable Linux installation.

I've got the impression that the motherboard is the problem. Being stuck with the old BIOS, this is a dead-end. I am thinking of ditching this motherboard and its manufacturer. Which motherboards are good for Linux?

Does it matter if I use the proprietary driver? The wiki says that the proprietary driver works on top of the open source driver, so I am a bit confused what exactly the proprietary driver is. Specifically, if I install the proprietary driver, will it change the outcome of trying to start the Xorg server on the latest BIOS?

decent job explaining it.

amdgpu-pro driver uses the same kernel module as opensource driver and often is troublesome to get to work on archlinux.
Looking back on the posts I realised we only looked at the opencl part, not at the overall configuration .

I've solved the issue with the BIOS. It was just that the numbers of PCI devices changed with the new BIOS. I wrote device numbers in `udev` rules.

I've mostly cleared `xorg.conf`. The `clinfo` still gives a segmentation fault.

For testing I suggest to rename/move the oxrg.conf and see if using X autodetection makes a difference.

reboot / restart X and post the xorg log.
