after changing from tightvnc to tigervnc, server geometry ignored

to support a vncserver, I was more or less forced to move to the updated tigerVNC.  I worked through all of the configuration and start changes, and now I have a working server again.  remaining issue is that the session seems to be ignoring some parts of the ~/.vnc/config file...namely the geometry parameter.  I have "geometry=1600x945" but this is ignored, and the window that is opened using a remote desktop (in this case using osx screen-sharing) is always a default size.  geometry was working previously with tightvnc.  Also, I have tried using VNCviewer on my Mac instead of native screen-sharing, but the result is the same.  geometry configuration is ignored.

what might I be missing?
