ALSA not working?

I'm trying to get audio working on a fresh arch install.
When I test audio using speaker-test there is an output but when I use any other application there is no output.

I've read the ALSA troubleshooting page on the arch wiki and it says that it's because pulseaudio is interfering however
I haven't installed pulseaudio.

What other tools are you testing and which speaker-test invocation are you using? Post

aplay -lL
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

during such a non working situation.
