[Solved] GUI Programs Freezing

Hello,

I've been having issues with multiple GUI-based programs (Thunderbird, Spotify, Slack, etc) for the past two or so weeks. Sometimes the app doesn't render at all (I just see a blank window) and other times it is very sluggish, e.g., I may hit "play" on Spotify and wait for 5~10 seconds until something happens or it the music may start playing instantly but the gui takes a long time to update. This doesn't happen all the time but very frequently.

- I'm using an RTX2080TI gpu with the latest nvidia drivers.
- I'm running i3

I don't think that the following is related because if I remember correctly the problems started before I did it:

I recently installed an GTX 970 to passthrough to a VM (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PC … h_via_OVMF).

Any ideas what might be causing this or which logs I should look into?

Thanks!

Re: [Solved] GUI Programs Freezing

What does your acceleration look like? post a /var/log/Xorg.0.log and

glxinfo -B

do you use a custom and/or generated xorg.conf and if so why and what are their contents.

Re: [Solved] GUI Programs Freezing

There're many errors around the wacom device - does it happen without?
Also: do you run a compositor (picom) next to i3?

Re: [Solved] GUI Programs Freezing

The freezes still happen with the wacom tablet disconnected. I sometimes run xcompmgr if some application needs it but not all the time, but the problems persist regardless of that.

Re: [Solved] GUI Programs Freezing

The freeze is limited to the particular client and eg. a video, glxgears or glmatrix keeps running as expected?
If the window is blank and you resize it, does it update immediately?
Do the freezes possibly relate to S3 cycles?

Re: [Solved] GUI Programs Freezing

They are always limited to one client. The window is not always blank sometimes it's properly rendered, e.g. in slack the cursor still blinks but I can't do anything. Sometimes the window displays "leftovers", e.g., if it's covered by another full-screen window and then uncovered. Resizing doesn't fix it.

I have no idea if this is related to S3, but this happens during normal use and not during idle times.

Re: [Solved] GUI Programs Freezing

I think I may have found a solution:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/sp … usic_plays

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Th … ew_message

I installed a notification server. If this was indeed the issue I'll mark this thread [solved].
