Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Hi,

I have arch installed on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 3) using i3-gaps as my window manager

Since I've set it up my portrait monitors randomly show a bunch of colors on the left side of the screen and starts flickering. Picture for example: Corrupted Screen

Sometimes this covers the whole screen and doesn't seem to follow any pattern. I can reproduce it consistently when I open a vim terminal with a lot of text, otherwise it will randomly pop up on any application running on my portrait monitors. The moment I move it to my horizontal monitor I have no issues. And the moment I make my portrait monitors horizontal I'm not able to reproduce the issue either.

I'm using the propritary nvidia drivers with optimus-manager

I've tried pretty much everything from enabling PRIME Synchronizing, setting Force Full Composition Pipeline, playing with every setting I could in nvidia-settings, and setting up DRM kernal mode and haven't been able to solve this.

Any idea on another path I can go down to resolve this issue?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Please post your xorg log and the outputs of "xrandr -q" and "xrandr --listproviders"
Do you use a compositor (picom) along i3?
Does the compromised aread always have the same geometry (width)?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

At the moment I do not use a compositor, I tested picom with a few different settings and I was not able to fix the issue, willing to try again though. I was just trying different settings through the command line, not sure if I need to stop i3 and start it with the settings to make a difference.

Does the compromised aread always have the same geometry (width)?
No, sometimes it will take up 90% of the screen.

Please post your xorg log and the outputs of "xrandr -q" and "xrandr --listproviders"
I have my laptop plugged into a docking station. With 3 external monitors. 1 horizontal, 2 portrait oriented. The 2 portrait monitors are the same model.

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Edited, and added the xorg log thank you.

Yes, the laptop is connected to a USB-C docking station which all 3 monitors are plugged into.

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

What if you put the pivoting outputs in cloning mode and also overlap the w/ the horizontal output (ie. limit the data that is transferred to the outputs aka the size of the rot window)?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Completely willing to try that out. Would I just be using xrandr to try it out? Or is there some documentation you could point me at to mess with it?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

You can just use xrandr, yes - basically

xrandr --output DP-1.1 --pos 0x0
xrandr --output DP-1.2 --pos 0x0
xrandr --output DP-1.3 --pos 0x0

should get you there.

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Just ran the above, the horizontal monitor is not having the issue described above, and now the 2 vertical monitors are showing the same issue but now they periodically show the corrupted screen at the same time, to the same width every 5-10 seconds.

Does that give any clues?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Doesn't seem to be the throughput, doesn't seem to be the GPU.
Let's annoy the system w/o pivoting

xrandr --output DP-1.1 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.2 --right-of DP-1.1 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.3 --below DP-1.1 --rotate normal

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Horizontal monitor had no issues (The original one), the other 2 monitors still get the bad screen with applications such as Vim/Chrome on them. If there is no application on the screen then it doesn't seem to show the issue.

One thing I've started to notice is when I'm in Vim on just black and white text I don't see the issue as much. But when there is lots of colored text the screen almost immediately get the error. But it's the same with Chrome and Slack.

I do use alacritty but I've tried gnome-terminal, kitty, and xterm and it still get this issue. I don't think it's tied to Vim by any means (I can post my vimrc if needed) but I'm thinking it has to do with a lot of colors.

The only other thing I can think of that I forgot to mention is that DP 1.1 is actually an HDMI cable, while DP 1.2 and DP 1.3 are actual DP cables.

Just tried:

xrandr --output DP-1.1 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.2 --right-of DP-1.1 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.3 --left-of DP-1.1 --rotate normal

Same issue.

xrandr --output DP-1.1 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.2 --primary --right-of DP-1.1 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.3 --left-of DP-1.1 --rotate normal

(Tried --primary on 1.2 & 1.3)
Same issue.

xrandr --output DP-1.1 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --mode 1920x1080
xrandr --output DP-1.2 --primary --right-of DP-1.1 --rotate normal --mode 1920x1080
xrandr --output DP-1.3 --left-of DP-1.1 --rotate normal --mode 1920x1080

Monitors are usually 2560x1440
Same issue.

I just tried all new display port cables, 2 different docking stations (40AS0090US, 40AN0135US), 2 different thunderbolt 3 cables, and the problem still persists. I don't game on this device at all. Would it be worth switching to the Nouveau drivers? Or possibly downgrading to a different version of the nvidia drivers to see if it fixes the issue?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

xrandr --output DP-1.1 --auto --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.2 --auto --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
xrandr --output DP-1.3 --auto --pos 0x0 --rotate normal

Which should show the same desktop on all … and possibly artifacts on two of the in which case

The only other thing I can think of that I forgot to mention is that DP 1.1 is actually an HDMI cable, while DP 1.2 and DP 1.3 are actual DP cables.

This one, can you swap out the cables and see whether it's always the HDMI one w/o the issue?

Could be the audio signal.

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Bingo, I switched the HDMI cable and the DP cable on the 2 other monitors and the HDMI cable was the only one that didn't show the issue. Anyway to block the audio signal on the DP cables? The monitors have speakers on them but I don't use them.

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

You could try to blacklist snd_hda_codec_hdmi, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … acklisting - use the /bin/true method.
I'm not aware how to block audio like "amdgpu.audio=0" for the nvidia blob.

Maybe it's enough to mute the sinks in alsa/pulseaudio?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

Sorry about the late response, been playing with this for the past bit.

I attempted to blacklist the snd_hda_codec_hdmi and snd_hda_intel and those didn't work.

I muted everything in alsa, and still no luck.

I notice that when I run

It shows everything as an HDMI when they are display port. Not sure if that could have something to do with it?

Re: Nvidia issues on portrait monitors [SOLVED]

I don't have a complete answer to this issue, but after talking to few people I found that they were also having this issue on the Yoga Gen 1-3. Solved it by using a display port to HDMI adapter.
