[SOLVED] Nvidia display not working

Hi installed Arch with LVM on LUKS encryption and Gnome as the DE on a machine today.
Everything was working when I first booted the machine, but after a reboot my main monitor is not detected anymore (my main monitor is hooked up to a GeForce GTX 1060 and the secondary monitor is using the Intel integrated graphics. The secondary monitor is working fine.) and I don't really know what could possibly cause this issue.

Any ideas on how to start resolving this issue?

Here are some information about the drivers, it might be useful:

$ lspci -v

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia display not working

I've had similar issues before. Try removing `xorg.conf`, located in /etc/X11/. Can you also post the output of the command `inxi -G`? You might need to install inxi first. It's available in the AUR.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia display not working

I will go ahead and try removing xorg.conf. Until then here is the output of inxi -G:

$ inxi -G
Graphics:
  Device-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics
  driver: i915 v: kernel
  Device-2: NVIDIA GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB] driver: nvidia v: 460.39
  Display: wayland server: X.org 1.20.10 driver: loaded: intel,nvidia
  unloaded: modesetting resolution: <missing: xdpyinfo>
  OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2)
  v: 4.5 Mesa 20.3.4

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia display not working

Well there's your problem. Wayland isn't supported by nvidia. To be able to use nvidia you should use Xorg.

For reference, my inxi -G looks like this:

$ inxi -G
Graphics: Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 driver: i915 v: kernel
           Device-2: NVIDIA TU117M [GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile / Max-Q] driver: nvidia v: 460.39
           Device-3: Lite-On Integrated Camera type: USB driver: uvcvideo
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.10 driver: loaded: intel,nvidia unloaded: modesetting resolution: 1: 1920x1080~60Hz
           2: 1920x1080~60Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.3.4

Note that the part starting with Display doesn't say wayland in my case.

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia display not working

I didn't know that the proprietary Nvidia drivers did not support Wayland and that was actually the problem. I solved it by editing /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

# GDM configuration storage

[daemon]
# Uncomment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg
WaylandEnable=false
DefaultSession=gnome-xorg.desktop

[security]

[xdmcp]

[chooser]

[debug]
# Uncomment the line below to turn on debugging
#Enable=true

Now it forces Gnome to use Xorg instead of Wayland.

The new output of inxi -G is:

Graphics:
  Device-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics
  driver: i915 v: kernel
  Device-2: NVIDIA GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 3GB] driver: nvidia v: 460.39
  Display: x11 server: X.org 1.20.10 driver: loaded: intel,nvidia
  unloaded: modesetting resolution: <missing: xdpyinfo>
  OpenGL: renderer: GeForce GTX 1060 3GB/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 460.39

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia display not working

That looks like it should work. All the drivers are loaded correctly it seems. If you remove (or already have removed) xorg.conf and restarted (which you have seeing as it's now using Xorg) I think it should work. If it does not then try checking if your Gnome display settings are set how you want them
