[SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Hi, I'm new to Arch Linux. This is my first post on a computer forum.
Due to recent events, I have started a search for a replacement to CentOS.
I completed a fresh install of Arch Linux, and I'm having a problem with my Keyboard, Video, Mouse switch. This problem was also present while installing Arch Linux from a live install USB stick.
The switch is for a single monitor, 2 computer system. My other system is a Windows 10 install.
The Arch Linux system starts up fine; login is fine; everything is good until I use the switch to go to the Windows system, and then try to switch back. There is no console to go back to.
I have had the switch, along with a new monitor for about a week. It works fine on Windows, and on my CentOS 8 install, which is on the same system as the new Arch Linux.
Typically, during the switching process there is about a 5 second delay with a dark screen, then the newly switched-to system works fine. When I switch to the Arch Linux system, after the 5 seconds of dark screen, there is a noticeable change to a slightly less dark screen. The keyboard and monitor do not seem to work at this point. No Linux command typed blind seems to do anything, such as reboot, systemctl reboot, ctrl-c, ctrl-d, esc, ctrl-alt-del. caps-lock and num-lock do not function. Edit: I cannot change to a new terminal. alt-right and alt-right have no effect, alt-ctrl f2, or f3... have no effect. The only thing on the keyboard that works is the hot-key sequence to switch back to Windows.
I'm not sure if this is a driver issue, a power state issue, or something else. I do not believe it is the switch itself. Also, the Arch Linux system seems fine until I switch away, and then switch back. After switching away to Windows the first time, I can access the system using SSH without a problem. Edit: lspci works fine at this poipnt. Output from ps aux shows the bash process I just left, on TTY1.
Switching back to Arch Linux gives me the dead, blank console. Switching again to Windows and using SSH, repeating ps aux shows that TTY1 is gone (the PID is gone) and later, there is a defunct login, and defunct bash zombie process.
Running lspci at this point causes the SSH terminal to lock up. After killing this process and re-connecting with SSH, there are defunct bash and sshd zombie processes.
The lspci process remains, frozen, with state D.

kill PID, and kill -s kill PID

have no effect.
Edit: The fact that lspci freezes up, and cannot be killed, seems significant to me. I'm just not sure what it means. Can anyone offer some insight on this?
Being new to Arch Linux, many of the logs I'm used to using on on CentOS are not present. Can anyone suggest a course of action of where to start, or what logs might be helpful?
Edit: Unfortunately, most searches on the web and forums that include kvm switch, and "kvm switch" wind up giving information about Kernel-based Virtual Machine. Most of the rest deal with single hardware issues, like "mouse stopped working", or "keyboard slow". Also, these also usually deal with specific Desktop Environments.
This is probably something obvious that I'm missing, but so far this has been very frustrating.
Can anyone offer any suggestions or help in this? Thanks!

More info
I have not installed a DE yet. I was hoping to avoid wading in to that quagmire until after I had a few services up and running. This makes switching to Windows kind of vital.
As mentioned, this problem was also present while installing from usb. Since this is a new install, the only things I've enabled so far are NetworkManager, firewalld, and sshd. Since this is intended to be a low power 24/7 system, I have now masked these systemd targets: sleep, suspend, hibernate, hybrid-sleep, suspend-then-hibernate.
About the switch
Lower cost, from Amazon. Manufacturer is AimOS. No support appears to be available. Works fine switching to CentOS 8- full install, Windows 10, and the systems UEFI firmware boot-up screen. 2 HDMI inputs, 1 HDMI output, 1 usb mouse input, 1 usb keyboard input, 2 usb outputs (1 for each system, keyboard and mouse shared).
About my system
ODroid H2+.  A small board system. Modern Intel Celeron (Coffee Lake Gemini Lake) processor. Intel video, sound; Realtek ethernet; Arch is installed on an old hard drive, CentOS 8 is on nvme drive, (I'm to eventually hoping to swap this arrangement).

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

You have done a great job diagnosing that and expressing the steps you have taken in your first post.  Kudos.

You might take a close look at the journal and see what is posted at the time you switch away and switch back.
When you switch back and the screen is blank, have you tried switching to a different console using Ctrl-Alt-F2 (or F3, F4, ....)

I don't have a solution in mind, just fishing for a little more information.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Thanks to ewaller for the reply.
The post also made me realize that I have completely overlooked dmesg.
I did try switching terminals, using alt-arrows, ant ctrl-alt f2..., to no effect.
Also, I realize I was actually giving myself a hint a when I mentioned that there were several zombie processes. I'm not sure what it means, but there is probably some info I can dig up that may possibly be relevant.
Edit: It seems I can no longer repaeat the zombie process situation.
While lspci freezing up seems significant to me, I should have made that more clear in the original post.
I will edit the original post slightly for clarity, and collect some kind of logging info that includes a time frame relevant to the problem.

Ensure you've https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode and see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ete_freeze (forget about the context, intel has had multiple cstate transitioning problems, also https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105962#c54 )

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Here is some further information that may be helpful for anyone else experiencing a similar problem with a KVM switch, or anyone trying to help.
I am posting the output of dmesg -T, going back to boot up. It is somewhat lengthy, but I believe it may be useful. Also, in order to to create a time frame relative to what I'm doing  and when the problem starts, I've recorded my actions, and the approximate time. The times are not perfect since I just took them from my phone as I was taking these steps, but due to the time gaps in each sequence, it reasonably pinpoints the events.
Also, I will mention that both Arch Linux and Windows 10 wrongly believe that my HDMI monitor has sound capability. I do not think this is related to the problem, but an error does appear in dmesg in the area where sound hardware is initilized.

16:37:52 - switched back to Windows
16:40:14 - second ssh login using CentOS 7 minimal install, on VM Ware Player, on same Windows system

I will also add that in the dmesg output, there is a line such as:

This continues to occur every 2 minutes.

I mentioned that lspci will cause a terminal using SSH to freeze after switching back to Windows a second (or more) time. I am speculationg that the problem piece of hardware, when polled by lspci, is causing this. Here is the output before problems occur, in case anyone reckognizes a piece of hardware  that has a known issue:

Also, thank you to seth for the reply. I do have microcode updates enabled. The second link makes a suggestion. I didn't notice a difference, but all of the above were done after including this kernel parameter at boot:

intel_idle.max_cstate=1

The third link has additional info, but I have not yet read it in depth. I will do that next.
Can anyone offer a suggestion based on this information, or does anyone think I might be goimg in the wrong direction? Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

strace -o lscpi.log lspci

See if lspci.log shows where lspci gets hung.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

I can't find any lspci.log.
I have just installed strace. The command just locks up the terminal.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Thank you, though loqs, it was worth a try. I'm guessing it needs to exit normally in order to write the log. I will see if I can find a still open file descriptor that may have some recoverable info.
Also, I will mention that while this is a problem with a keyboard video mouse switch, at this point, for now, I am assuming that the keyboard and mouse are less likely culprits, and focusing on the graphics hardware.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Emulate lspci from the shell

for dev in /sys/bus/pci/devices/*; do echo checking $dev;sleep 1; cat $dev/{class,config,vendor,device}; done

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Thanks to loqs for the last suggestion, which appears to advance things a step.

loqs wrote:

This cleared the screen, and caused each line to overwrite the next. I believe this may be garbled because I am using Putty.
Using:

for dev in /sys/bus/pci/devices/*; do echo checking $dev "; ">>sys-devices2;sleep 3; cat $dev/{class,config,vendor,device}>>sys-devices2; done

This writes to file. Using cat with Putty gives similarly garbled results.
Also, this does freeze up the terminal, but accessing the file from a different terminal using cat gives somewhat more informative results.
The file output gets to the 3rd item before freezing, and not finishing. The info provided also appears garbled, but does not seem to overwrite itself.
I have been using Putty because it is convenient to copy and then paste, I will need to take steps to reproduce the file output here, although it may not make sense to anyone. Also, at this point it might be helpful to post output lspci -v , or lspci -vv for the 3 item. I will need to reboot and do that from the login terminal.
For now, showing the 3rd item again from lspci:

00:0e.0 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio (rev 03)

Wow. I said above I didn't think this was related to HDMI sound. Looks like I may have been wrong.
Thanks again to loqs, and everyone who helped get me to this point.
To summarize where I'm at:
Arch Linux and Windows believe my monitor (ASUS VP248HE) has HDMI sound equipment. The manufacturers website says it is not a feature for this model. The monitor on screen menu does not have any available settings related to sound. The monitors sibling model does advertise sound, and its manual documents settings for sound.
I know sometimes manufacturers include some extra hardware even though its not advertised (sometimes all the extra hardware). It can be cheaper than retooling, or to meet deadlines. This could be causing problems here. Maybe in the future I will see if I have some free features.
For now, I will try to disable HDMI sound. I will need to investigate.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to disable HDMI sound early on in the boot process?

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Thanks, loqs, for the new reply. This looks like a promising lead, and I see some similarities. The KVM switch must emulate some kind of alternate state of the monitor, to send to the system that not is not in focus.
To add to some things I said in post #10, after switching, the command:

for dev in /sys/bus/pci/devices/*; do echo checking $dev;sleep 1; cat $dev/{class,config,vendor,device}; done

causes a lock up on the ssh terminal. The 'config' directory portion outputs non-printing characters, which is what causes the garbled output, and overwriting.
The cause of the lockup could be occuring before item 3 in the lspci output, but with a delayed reaction.

Also, to highlight some things from post #5:
- switching from Arch Linux to Windows the first time causes no unusual logging items.
- switching from Windows back to Arch Linux gives a blank screen, but causes no immediate logging events
- log items of note start about 2 minutes later, before switching to Windows again
- the log items that occur 2 minutes after switching indicate a problem has existed for about 2 minutes
- this series of log events  occurs every roughly every 2 minutes thereafter, regardless of the switching state
This is the series that coincides with the first switch back to the blank screen:

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

You could dump the EDID from the actual monitor and pass that the drm module, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … s_and_EDID

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

I'm still trying to solve this issue. I have made some progress.
I tried disabling modesetting, as detailed in this link https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … odesetting.
I add these bootup kernel parameters:

nomodeset i915.modeset=0

This solved the problem, and I was able to switch back and forth without issue.
This is just a workaround, though, as this is a fairly heavy handed solution. It was nice to use Arch Linux in its native console, and freely switch back and forth to Windows.
While this a video solution, it also affects the sound system, since they are linked for HDMI audio.
I also found some readings that coincide with the problems.
When first booting up, before switching, the command:

cat /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0e.0/power/runtime_status

returns 'active'.
The device here is the third entry using lspci: 00:0e.0 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio (rev 03)
After re-enabling modesetting, I made some progress in a different manner.
After switching to Windows the first time, and accessing using ssh, the same command shows 'suspended', which I guess makes sense since the system is out of focus. This represents the sound system, but I don't have any sound equipment attached, and no sound apps running, so I guess the sound system is not required.
After switching to Linux, and getting a blank screen, and then back to Windows, the same command returns 'resuming'. This is the only result returned after this point until next reboot.
I decided to focus on one portion of the system: the HDMI audio.
I blacklisted the snd_hda_codec_hdmi module, using the kernel parameter:

module_blacklist=snd_hda_codec_hdmi

This solves the problem!
However, it does cause a new problem. At the moment of switching, I get some logging events. Here is some dmesg output, from switching 2 different times:

[Feb24 01:44] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:0e.0: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last cmd=0x20170500

[ +0.012771] snd_hda_codec_generic hdaudioC0D2: Unable to sync register 0x2f0d00. -5

The logging events occur at the time of switching from Linux to Windows. They do not seem to repeat while on the Windows system, or on switching back to Linux. Only when switch away from Linux.
This is a different part of the audio system that is being affected by the blacklisting of the module.
Can anyone offer any insight as to what this output means, or what kind of effect this may have. Thanks.

As seth said you could try to dump the EDID and modify it so it doesn't advertise audio support if it has any.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Thanks again for the replies.
I did dump the EDID, but found no mention of HDMI audio in the capabilities. I do still believe this problem (or the solution) is related to the sound system in some way.
I will post the output of parse-edid here, in case someone is able to spot something out of the ordinary:

I also tried plugging the monitor directly into my system, with no switch. The output of parse-edid was identical.
While in the process of unplugging and plugging the monitor, the same blank screen occurred when plugging in, requiring a reboot.
Also, after learning a bit more about the call trace logged in dmesg, shown above in post #12, one of the last commands listed before the hang is this:

i915_hotplug_work_func...

Obviously I shouuld have zeroed in on this much sooner.
Since the blank screen on switching is not a problem on my CentOS 8 install, I booted into that system and tried hotplugging directly. No problems. It worked fine.
So the switch must emulate hotplugging, and hotplugging seems to be the issue.
As mentioned in post #14, blacklisting one of the sound modules, 'snd_hda_codec_hdmi' has unwanted side effects, since the codec it loads is needed by other modules.
I tried blacklisting module 'snd_hda_intel'. This is the main controller for the sound system. Blacklisting effectively disables the sound system. The sound card is not detected. The system only has the 1 sound card.
This does solve the hotplugging problem, although it leaves me with no sound.
While this is also somewhat heavy handed, like disabling modesetting, I think disabling the sound at least has clear side effects. I do have plans for the sound system, so these are undesirable, but I think that the effect of disabling modesetting is less clear and less predictable.
Of course this is not an acceptable long term solution.

So the problem redefined, is that there is an HDMI hotplug issue, somehow related to sound.

The only connection I can think of between the 2 is HDMI audio. Does anyone have anything further to add to this?
I still believe that there is probably one small setting I need to get right, although it is possible it is some sort of bug.
Since this is not a problem on CentOS, I believe that I have narrowed the (possible) problem down enough to start comparing some individual parameters.
I have already noticed that Arch Linux has more parameters in the sound and graphics modules, probably due to the considerable difference in kernel versions.
My next steps will be to focus on the i915 and snd_hda_intel modules, and to increase some logging verbosity, as suggested in the third link in seth's post, post #4.
If anyone has any pointers or suggestions, please let me know.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

parse-edid will not print audio information. You could try edid-decode instead (from the AUR).

What kernel version is the centOS install using?

Is the issue present under Arch using 5.10.12?

Thank you for that info. I will install it on Arch Linux and try.

What kernel version is the centOS install using?

CentOS 8 is on 4.18.0, customized by Red Hat, although they do backport some new features to their version.
I think the Arch Linux install image was version 5.10.12, or maybe it was 5.10.11. It was a problem during install. I will double check, and if it was not 5.10.12, I will try it.
Thank you for the replies. I'm feeling much more optimistic about solving this.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Newest Arch ISO 2021.02.01 uses 5.10.11 so if you have issues on the ISO can not be the issue I was thinking of.
Edit:
You could try https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-lts419/
If you do try it,  see also https://archlinux.org/news/moving-to-zs … kinitcpio/

Might also be worth seeing if changing module parameters has any effect:

snd_hda_codec_hdmi.enable_acomp=off snd_hda_codec_hdmi.enable_silent_stream=off

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal disappears when using kvm switch, then switching back

Good news!
The combination of the 2 parameters suggested by loqs in post #20 worked.
Using the kvm switch to switch between my 2 systems works properly, again and again. I also tried hotplugging HDMI, and it works as well.
The is no mention of problems in the output of dmesg, at boot up or when switching. There is no new log output after bootup, and I have switched many times now. The problem appears to be gone.
I maybe should have mentioned in post #14, that I did try the first parameter by itself, but with no effect, before I tried blacklisting that module. I'm at a loss to explain why I didn't try the other, or the combination. Anyway, loqs may not have suggested the the winning solution if I had mentioned it, who knows.
I will also point out that these are 2 of the parameters not available in CentOS 8. I guess these are features added since 4.18.0, and these parameters provide the ability to roll them back. This was useful for me.
To summarize
The Problem - using a kvm switch with HDMI, or hotplugging HDMI, causes a terminal lock up, or blank screen on Arch Linux
            - Arch Linux boots up fine. After switching away once (or unplugging HDMI), then switching back (or re-plugging), there is only a blank screen
            - typing commands blind at the keyboard is ineffective
            - no DE installed. Using the Linux console
            - Arch Linux still functions otherwise, accessible using SSH
            - this is a terminal (or console) interaction problem, but somehow is also related to HDMI audio
            - one possible theory was that the system was mistakenly under the impression that my monitor has audio equipment. I still have not definitively determined what the monitor reports for audio capabilities
            - in my particular situation, I have confirmed there are no speakers in the monitor. Disabling HDMI audio is not a problem for me.
The solution: these kernel parameters (both):

snd_hda_codec_hdmi.enable_acomp=off snd_hda_codec_hdmi.enable_silent_stream=off

solve the problem.
While in previous posts I mention other kernel parameters and module blacklisting that were tried, none of these are used in the solution. Only these 2 parameters.

Thank you to loqs and everyone else that posted, providing suggestions.
I have run the system headless since acquiring it last November. Solving this problem has removed the dependence I had on my Windows system. I no longer have to use SSH to access the system. That was the main reason I bought the switch, and now it's working great.
I will also mention that while this problem has been present since the install, and has had me somewhat stuck in the mud right out of the gate for a few days, I've never looked and questioned my decision to try Arch Linux.

The two kernel params in the last post worked for me, although I still can't suspend, this does allow me to wake up from dpms
