Booting from a removable device questions

Hi. The wiki describes how to boot Linux with an encrypted root partition on SSD and a kernel on a removable device. I have several questions:

  1. Can I remove the removable device when the OS has booted?

  2. If the kernel is on the removable device, how do I update the kernel then?

  3. Who decrypts the root partition, GRUB or the Linux kernel? So I know which version of LUKS and what encryption parameters to use.

  4. Can this removable device be a LiveUSB? So I have fewer USB sticks.

Re: Booting from a removable device questions

1- yes, eject and remove, nothing bad will happen
2- update while mounted like usual
3- the kernel
4- entirely possible, with some grub/bootloader shenanigans

Thank you for your answer.

I heard that LiveUSB uses Syslinux. Will it not conflict with GRUB?

You can boot the iso from grub with a different command line but nothing stops you from installing arch on a partition in the usb, updatable and with your personal touches.
