[SOLVED] How to re-install a plasma applet?

I would like to reinstall applet-window-buttons because of an issue that can be resolved by this action. However, I don't know how to go about this - please could someone help?

I have plasma-meta 5.21-1. Does this mean I have to reinstall the whole of plasma-meta?

System details:

As this is an applet outside of the shipped packages how did you acquire it originally? If via https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/plas … ttons-git/ you'll have to rebuild this package.

I think it is this one: https://archlinux.org/packages/communit … w-buttons/

However, I can't see this as a separate package when I do yay -Q | grep plasma, and so I think it's probably part of the meta package?

No, that means you didn't install the official package with pacman.

Ok, well I installed plasma-meta a while ago, and can't seem to figure out how to uninstall this applet. There is no gui option to delete it in the widget menu, so I'm assuming it was installed together with something else. When I try to install plasma5-applets-window-buttons via pacman now, there is an error because the files already exist.

Please could you advise on how I should reinstall this applet?

That depends on how you installed it. From the looks of it it seems you did a make install as root (which you should never do, btw). So try a make uninstall if you still have the build tree around.

Just found my notes from installation: I did sudo pacman -S plasma-meta, and I think the windows buttons applet was one of the provided widgets by default.

The Archwiki page for meta packages says "Users cannot remove meta package dependencies without having to uninstall the meta package itself.". Surely I'd be able to see plasma5-applets-window-buttons as a package though? I'm worried that if I pacman -Rns plasma-meta it might break my system...

Thank you, this was helpful advice and fixed my issue.

For the record, I did install from a github clone, but I did not realise until I found the folder for this applet in my home directory. I was then able to uninstall, git pull, and install in the correct manner. After a restart my issue was resolved.

@Scimmia Yes, of course @arojas was correct. I was not insisting on anything, I simply did not understand his comments due to my inexperience (e.g. I did not know what 'make install' meant so I had to look this up etc), so I was just clarifying what I had already done. It is not necessary or constructive for an experienced person like you to make rude comments that contribute nothing to solve the issue at hand. You can make a great impact if you post polite and helpful comments like the majority of others on the forums. I can see that you have previously mostly been helpful in your comments to people seeking advice, so please keep it up, and I'm sorry if today was an off-day for you, or if I caused you offence.

@TimelyPeach: this isn't kindergarten: you are expected to fact-check your own posts BEFORE you post them and not waste people's time by saying "I did pacman -S plasma-meta" when clearly you didn't. Also not "remembering" that you used GitHub to build an applet and installed it outside of the official repos has nothing to do with lack of experience. You are using inexperience as an excuse for not owning up to your mistakes, not for the mistakes themselves. Your condescending comments are also way more aggressive towards @Scimmia than what he ever posted towards you so stop telling people to be polite or telling them they had an off-day. @twelveeighty thanks for your feedback. Just to clear up some points in your message:

1. I did in fact do pacman -S plasma-meta, but my mistake was not realising that this is nothing to do with the applet I was asking about. Nobody cleared this up for me until the last poster who pointed me in the right direction.
2. Yes I did not remember the way in which I installed the applet - that was a mistake I made. I explicitly owned up to that.
3. I have not been aggressive or condescending at all - I provided empathetic and constructive feedback, whilst also apologising.

You have clearly misunderstood the tone of my messages, but tbh it's hard to judge this on internet comments anyway. This whole thread was just a post asking for help, and I admit that I was ham-fisted and forgot how I set up my system. It boggles me how this has generated so much negativity as a side effect.

Anyway, in future I will make my posts clearer, and avoid making comments that may come across as aggressive or condescending. I will also avoid escalating things like this too because it is a waste of all our times. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone, and I hope you all have a nice weekend.
