Configuring smartd to make it do what you want is maddeningly complicated. And perhaps it just isn't possible to make it do what I want. But I thought I'd ask here before giving up on it and coming up with a hackish solution to work around this.
Simply put: I don't want to receive emails for things I already know. Only if an attribute value changes should an email be sent. It goes without saying I went over the poorly written man pages for smartd and smartd.conf a few times.
First I tried enabling autosaving attributes with 'smartctl -S on /dev/sdX'. All my drives support it according to 'smartctl -a'. Added also "-S on" to smartd.conf as well. Doesn't change a thing. Everytime smartd restarts it sends an email about the CurrentPendingSector count being non-zero even though it hasn't changed.
I tried adding "-I 197" and/or "-i 197" to ignore the CurrentPendingSector attribute with various combinations of options. And there's just no way to make it shut up about the CurrentPendingSector when it restarts.
Drives can last for years with no problems whatsoever with a non-zero CurrentPendingSector count. I myself had such drives that lasted for over 10 years of online hours with a non-zero CurrentPendingSector count in their early years. Sometimes CurrentPendingSector count doesn't even work properly with some drives.
If anyone has a solution to this, I'd be grateful.
