When I run xmonad etcher shows no polkit authentication agent found but when I use xfce it works fine... GParted doesn't even run in xmonad unless I launch it using sudo...

In case you are unclear on what the start for a polkit looks like... here's my favorite (lxpolit). Just place this (or your favorite) in a window manager autostart function.

Please don't bump your post and don't double post if you want to amend an existing post, there's an edit button to add in additional adjustments. There's also no need to explicitly quote people directly above you.
Yes you can put it into your .xinitrc manyroads gave you an example command, if you do not want to install any additional agent you can use polkit-gnome that xfce is using which would mean you'd need to add
/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &
somewhere that is invoked on autostart
