[SOLVED] Which updates require a system restart?

Hi all,

I usually restart my system right after I install an update of the kernel or of nvidia. I can't remember why I established this practice.
Can I just continue working without system restart? And what about other packages e.g. btrfs-progs which require a rebuild of a initcpio image?
Could someone please enlighten me?

Re: [SOLVED] Which updates require a system restart?

There’s an AUR package that is named needrestart that can tell you when you need a restart.

Other than that, restart to load new kernel or such, if you have configured a way to keep current kernel and modules available after update you are fine.

Let’s say you need to modprobe something after kernel update and you didn’t load the kernel and modules to memory, you will get a missing module and will need to restart.
