Why does bluetooth hsp / hfp profiles suddenly work?

I am using a Sony WH-1000XM3 headset, bluez, pulseaudio, and blueman.

Before, I could only use a2dp. When I tried to switch to HSP/HFP using pavucontrol, it just switched to 'off' instead. I don't remember the exact error I used to get. I never managed to solve this and used the laptop microphone and a2dp instead.

But today I realized that I was able to switch to HSP/HFP mode. When I did, I started to hear the the output of the headset microphone in my headphones, and I could only change volume using alsamixer, not pulseaudio.

So I am just curious, why does it work now? I have not changed any configuration related to this recently AFAIK.

I saw that there was an update to bluez fairly recently, but I couldn't find anything related to this.

Could there have been an update to the headset itself? Sometimes there are updates in the android app, but I don't know if that updates the app or the headphones, or both.

I think I will stick to using ad2p in any case, since the quality is so low using HSP/HFP.
