[SOLVED] Systemd fails with status=203 only on ZFS encrypted dataset

I recently installed Arch Linux on ZFS, following a mix of  Install Arch Linux on ZFS and the Installation Guide with some parts omitted since I already had a zpool and dataset that I wanted to use. My zpool is called rpool, then I have a dataset which is the encryption root at rpool/ROOT, and then Arch Linux installed on a child dataset at rpool/ROOT/arch, which is my entire root filesystem except for /boot. My boot is on a separate partition which is formatted ext4.

When booting, grub loads fine, initramfs seems to run fine and prompts me for the encryption root's key, then starts init. Once init is running, many services fail with 203/EXEC indicating missing executables, and I'm never able to login. When I clone this dataset out of the encryption root, to rpool/arch by using zfs send | zfs recv, then leave grub and the initramfs unchanged other than changing the Linux command line from root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/arch to root=ZFS=rpool/arch in grub, Arch boots and inits without issues.

I'm able to access the journal after it fails to init, so the root filesystem must be being mounted and staying mounted for the duration of init. I'm at a loss for how (or if) the encryption root is changing things, since the zpool is imported successfully during initramfs and the encryption root has its key loaded successfully. Additionally to encryption, rpool/ROOT has compression enabled, but that's about it for non-default zfs configs.

Note that I see the "Failed to start Remount Root and Kernel File Systems." failure even on the unencrypted dataset, as the only init error. I'm not sure the cause of that yet, but it doesn't seem to be related.

Any ideas on what could be going on to cause this difference, or what further debugging info could give some useful info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I can't repro the issue anymore, and am booting from an encrypted dataset no problem now.

I guess I probably didn't have a complete clone when I first tested, and then was cloning from the incomplete copy or something for all my other tests..
