Laptop backlight off on resume

As the title alludes to here's the issue

(Acer Aspire 4830TG) suspends fine on lid close (or using suspend from the xfce menu).

it resumes almost fine. everything comes back up perfectly fine with the exception of the backlight. Now it's not a huge issue, if I just Fn + -> (brightness up key) it brings it back to life.

What's the cause and how do I fix it? I have searched a lot and mostly what I find is related to the backlight coming on but not the system, I have the reverse problem.
