X1 Carbon Gen 7 has no detected external screens

A few weeks ago I updated my X1 Carbon to the latest kernel. On reboot it no longer detected any external monitors. I have a LG screen connected via USB-C, this is powering my laptop correctly, it is also acting correctly as a hub for my mouse and webcam but there is no display output and shows no signal detected.

I tried rolling back the kernel to the previous working version and the monitor is still not working.
I have tried HDMI as an input also no luck.
The monitor works for other devices.
The monitor used to mirror the laptop screen when I was booting my laptop, this is no longer the case.

Plugging in the USB-C outputs this in journalctl

Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: X1 Carbon Gen 7 has no detected external screens

Did you find a solution for this? I'm seeing something similar on my Gen 6 connected to an external screen over Display Port via a docking station. It charges fine but neither the screen nor USB nor ethernet is working.

I ran

fwupdmgr upgrade

and restarted and it seems to have fixed it? No idea tbh.

Re: X1 Carbon Gen 7 has no detected external screens

I think I have narrowed it down to a firmware update that corrupted my thunderbolt chip. Lenovo talk about it here.

I am fairly convinced that running fwupdmgr upgrade is what broke the laptop in the first place. Unfortunately after a visit back to Lenovo support, in which they claimed Linux was unsupported and that it was a software issue that could be resolved by installing windows, I still have the issue.

The funniest part is, I can't even install Windows because the setup cannot detect the drivers for the usb ports. I assume because the firmware is broken.

My next step is attempting to flash the firmware myself as described here.

Overall pretty disappointed with Lenovo!
