Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

I can ping google.com and archlinux.org with no problem whatsoever, but every single mirror I've tried to ping gives me this error.

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

You can't ping protocols this way.
Whatever your update problem is has nothing to do w/ "ping http://google.com" not working, that's perfectly expected.

The problem is likely w/ the particular mirror, use reflector.
https://archlinux.org/packages/community/any/reflector/

Otherwise please post teh exact and actual errors you're facing.

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

I actually initially ran into this problem because of issues with reflector.  I'd get timeouts for every single server, regardless of the value I set --download-timeout to (tried up to 120s).  I thought the reason for the error was that I couldn't connect to http:// servers (I really have very little understanding of ip mechanisms), but after trying to ping about 20 mirrors without http:// or https://, I received the same error.  So it looks like my issue is that I can't connect to mirrors.

Here's the output of my recent reflector trial:

reflector --verbose --latest 20 --sort rate --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

No problems accessing https://archlinux.thaller.ws/community/ … mmunity.db from here.
Output of

ping -c1 google.com
ping -c1 archlinux.thaller.ws
ip a
ip r

Likely cause is that you've IPv6 but no IPv4 access.

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

That's "inet" - you do have an IPv4 lease on enp39s0, you do resolve IPv4 addresses and you actually did ping archlinux.thaller.ws fine.
Sanity check:

find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

Uh oh. Sanity check doesn't sound good, lol.

Little extra info if this helps: I'm sure this is not a router issue or DNS issue, as I ran into this same problem on a different router/ip address on a different fresh install.

Here's the output of that command:

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

Sanity check to ensure you're not running concurrent network services - you don't.

 wget -O /dev/null https://archlinux.thaller.ws/community/os/x86_64/community.db
curl --verbose https://archlinux.thaller.ws/community/os/x86_64/community.db > /dev/null

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

There's no error in the downloads, sure the original issue remains?

Well dl speed was fine but looks like I still cannot ping mirrors.

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

Yes you can and you did in #5
Again: you cannot do something like "ping http://google.de" - that is not a problem on your side. ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol, "ping") and http are different protocols.
We had you successfully download a database from the mirror in #10 & #11, somehing that had failed in #3.
Therefore and because of

My internet connection is awful where I'm staying atm.

I assume you were/are facing an intermittent issue?

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

I guess I just don't understand why every single mirror on reflector times out.  The connection here is definitely terrible, but my dl speed back home is 500mbps and even there I'd see all mirrors timeout when I tried to run reflector.  Another piece of info is that "pacman-mirrors fasttrack" on the Manjaro OS I was using a few days ago would result in about 1/2 of the mirrors timing out but the other half being rated and sorted.  Reflector has yet to rate a single mirror despite seemingly every other network-related task running flawlessly, which is extremely confusing/frustrating.  Maybe I should go back to Manjaro until I have the free time to dive into linuxjourney.com, and get a better understanding of this stuff before coming back to arch.

Re: Error: "Name or service not known" when pinging any mirror

Reflector has yet to rate a single mirror despite seemingly every other network-related task running flawlessly

So the issue isn't actually that you can't ping mirrors, but *only* w/ reflector?
A hand-written mirrorlist (or generated from https://archlinux.org/mirrorlist/ ) works?

What if you give it more time?

reflector --verbose --download-timeout 100 --latest 20 --sort rate --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
