[SOLVED] Drag and drop to browser

Hi,

I'm having a strange problem for which I can't find and answer. I can't drag-and-drop a file into a browser!

I first came across it when I tried to drag and drop a file into google drive. I tried Firefox and chrome, but no success. If I try to drag-and-drop a file into the browser it's self it won't.

I can upload a file into google drive through the menu.

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.21.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.80.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.10.26-1-lts
OS Type: 64-bit
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 12 × Intel® Core™ i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz
Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 630

I'm using Firefox developer 88.0b3 and chrome 89.0.4389.82

Any  one has any suggestions to what is happening?

Re: [SOLVED] Drag and drop to browser

I can't drag-and-drop a file into a browser!

That requires the webservice to implement ondrop and do something useful with it.
Why do you expect it to work?

Re: [SOLVED] Drag and drop to browser

Hi seth,

Sorry I didn't understand  your answer. I just recently installed Arch.

I can drag & drop in windows (I have a dual boot setup), and I could also do it in Opensuse which I was the OS I was using before Arch.
I'm used to using drag and drop into google drive, have always done it.

Re: [SOLVED] Drag and drop to browser

You mean drive.google.com?
That actually implements ondrop, I assume the problem is that your filebrowser runs on wayland and the browser in an xwayland context.
What if you log into a plasma on X11 session?

Re: [SOLVED] Drag and drop to browser

I login to X11 and it worked.

So, I check the difference between X11and wayland here:   https://linuxiac.com/xorg-x11-wayland-l … explained/

It seems that wayland will eventually replace X11. So is there any way I can the drop in wayland?

Re: [SOLVED] Drag and drop to browser

DnD *in* wayland (eg. between two dolphin windows) will rather not be the problem.
Your situation is more like dragging into a windows explorer in a virtualbox window (xwayland is a nested X11 server)
It should™ also be possible to DnD into an xwayland server, but esp. KDE/wayland is work in progress.

Not necessarily! Wayland does not improve on X11 in every respect and there is some mounting unhappiness about that and its very slow development progress in Linux developer circles. X11 might be replaced eventually—not by Wayland, but by whatever comes after it, combining the respective strengths of Wayland and X11. So there is no point in ditching X11 right now if it works better for you. Wayland may or may not be the future.

And yes, like seth mentioned, KDE on Wayland in particular is still a bit buggy and rough around the edges. Gnome/Wayland works a lot better in comparison...

Re: [SOLVED] Drag and drop to browser

Ok, thx guys.

I've used Gnome before but I prefer  the KDE environment, although I did use Gnome with other OS's so I can always give Gnome a try in Arch.

Anyway, thanks for the help. It was driving me crazy.
