External monitor is too zoomed in (different dpi to internal display)

I am using qtile as a window manager and the proprietary nvidia drivers with prime offloading -rendering is done by the iGPU but the nvidia outputs are accessible.

My external monitor shows what seems to be the top left quarter of what it should be showing, but scaled to fit the whole screen.

I had my external monitor working before, but using optimus-manager. However using this was a pain as I had to switch to nvidia mode when I wanted to have access to my hdmi / thunderbolt display outputs.

The xrandr script I'm using is the same as what I used before, but with the new output names:

#!/bin/bash

xrandr --dpi 276
xrandr --output DP-1-0.1 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --scale 2x2
xrandr --output eDP1 --primary --mode 3840x2160 --pos 1327x2160 --rotate normal

Re: External monitor is too zoomed in (different dpi to internal display)

Perhaps fixed w/ xorg-server 1.21 and at least the modesetting driver.
Until then, just run eDP1 at a lower resolution.

How would I use the modesetting driver? Currently I have mesa installed (and xf86-video-intel is not installed)

Is there any easy way to use xorg-server 1.21 or would I have to compile it myself? I couldn't find it in the arch repos / AUR

I tried setting the laptop display and external monitor both to 1080p but the problem seems to be the same on both displays. Changing the dpi with xrandr --dpi has no effect.

Re: External monitor is too zoomed in (different dpi to internal display)

modesetting is the default driver (so w/o xf86-video-intel, you're using it. check your xorg log)

xorg-server 1.21 doesn't exist so far. You'll have to wait.

Please post what you actually did and also the resulting output of "xrandr -q".

So for the full res attempt:

$ xrandr --output DP-1-0.1 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of eDP-1 --rotate normal --scale 2x2

$ xrand -q

Re: External monitor is too zoomed in (different dpi to internal display)

And for the low res attempt:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 5760 x 2160, maximum 16384 x 16384

I assume you didn't un-scale the output at any stage?

Edit,

xrandr --output DP-1-0.1 --scale 1x1 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of eDP-1 --rotate normal
