[SOLVED] Thinkpad T490s overheating

Hi, I have a problem with a new laptop running intel core i7-8565U CPU and integrated HD620 graphics. It's extremely overheating - sensors report CPU temperature over 90°C while idle (with the laptop fan running at the maximum speed). The load average reported by uptime is also going up and down widly (between 1 and 10). I'm sure it's a software problem, because when I dual-boot into windows, the temperatures go down.

The only clue is that I've read that newer lenovo laptops have trouble with CPU throttling while running linux, but discussions on the lenovo forums are gone and I didn't find any details. I tried the throttled package that fixes the problem for some laptops, but it doesn't do anything for me.

I have no idea what info to post here to help diagnose the problem.

Please, help me before my laptop blows up!

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T490s overheating

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Le … kPad_T490s
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Le … nkPad_T490 - "lenovo laptops have trouble with CPU throttling while running linux" seems rather the other way round (throttle early)

I'd start by checking what actually draws power (cause the heat is coming from somewhere…) w/ "powertop" and "top" (for rogue processes)
Then check and tune the CPU frequency, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CP … cy_scaling

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T490s overheating

Thanks fro the quick reply. I couldn't see any rogue processes in top/powertop, so I did the simplest thing - turned off the programs that start with my i3wm. The culprit turned out to be conky; which is strange as I've been using it for years to display useful stuff on my previous thinkpads...

Also, I didn't know about the windows fast-boot - great tip :-)

You can psot your conkyrc for review if you can't identify the trigger (usually it's some script that gets called with rapid frequency)

I've already gone through it and found the few extra zeros - so now I do feel like a complete idiot. Thanks anyway.
