Pulse cannot find internal microphone

Pulse Audio cannot find the internal microphone.
Running
arecord -vv --format=dat /dev/null
returns a card setup that is responsive to external audio (me talking) as well as audio output from the machine.

Pulse audio (Pavucontrol) cannot find any input device besides for "Monitor of built in Audio Analog Stereo", ie the output audio from the machine.

So it seems that alsa knows about my microphone, but pulse does not. As such any application that uses pulse cannot find any input device.
If headphones are plugged in pulse identifies that.

How to tell pulse where my internal mic is?
