[SOLVED] File manager hunt

I have been on the hunt for a GUI file manager for a while now. But I've never found one that works for me.
My criteria:-

  1. Has to be fast

  2. Must be able to display different folders in different views. Ex: Detailed view for Downloads folder, Grid view for Pictures folder.

  3. Must be able to sort files in different orders depending on the folder. Ex: "Desending by creation date" for ~/Downloads and "Ascending by Alphabetical order" for all others

  4. Must have less dependencies for installation

  5. Must not be a dead project

Disclaimer:These disadvantages are purely my opinion. No offense intended to anyone.

  • Nautilus: doesn't satisfy many of the criteria.

  • Thunar: doesn't have views for different folders.(Criterion-2)

  • PCManFM: Same as Thunar

  • Nemo: Slow load times. (I use wayland btw)

  • SpaceFM: Same as Thunar

  • Dolphin: This one was very close but too many dependencies.

Do you know something suitable for me??
Thanks in advance smile

Well, you'll need then a file manager that uses a per directory configuration or a database which seems a sane option.
Haven't seen one, any thoughts about creating a plugin for a plugin capable file manager?

I wouldn't be surprised there is actually a plugin out there that does just this, it's quite a simple idea.

You might want to try qtfm from AUR, even though it's dead-ish and doesn't provide the ability to have different view types for specific folders, it might suit for the rest of the points.

Re: [SOLVED] File manager hunt

While you're at it you might wanna try out Cornus [1] which I wrote.
A person kindly agreed to package it but don't know if it made it [2] to Arch.

Has lots of features but only one (customizable) detailed view though.
It can sort files in different ways but doesn't remember the "per folder" feature - I'll probably implement it because I think it's useful.
