possible dead video card?

Today I was using my laptop (IBM Thinkpad T40p) and the screen went all screwy.  See screenshot.
I logged out of X, and the screen was still messed up.  I rebooted, same problem - even during boot, before grub loaded.  I hooked the laptop up to an external monitor, same problem.  I'm thinking the video card (64mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9000) is the problem, but I'm interested in your opinion, as well as any additional troubleshooting I could do.

Thanks!

Re: possible dead video card?

Unfortunetly the machine is not set to boot from CD, and I can't see what I'm doing well enough while I'm in BIOS to change the boot sequence.  However, the fact that the screen is crazy even in BIOS leads me to think that it is not an OS issue.

Re: possible dead video card?

Sounds dead if BIOS does not show up ;-(.....

Is it under warranty?

Re: possible dead video card?

I know this kind of artefact can appears because of an overheat problem with the graphic card, but it's a Mobility 9000, so I'm not sure it's the case...

You should try to contact IBM.

Re: possible dead video card?

If this problem still persists after you let the laptop cool for awhile you can be sure it's probably bad hardware. The fact that your external display shows the same type of corruption is also not good. You should contact IBM and see if you can get warrenty service (I hope it's still under warrenty).

Re: possible dead video card?

Thanks for your help guys.  It does occur when cold.  I did contact IBM, and no warranty.  $450 to replace the mobo (which contains the graphics chip).  I don't feel like the machine is worth that kind of investment.  I'm pretty bummed.  Maybe I can sell it off for parts, it does have the SXGA+ screen.
