Cannot load desktop after update

Hi,
It's been 2 weeks since my last update, but after a full system update this morning, I can no longer reach my desktop.

I use startx to load my XFCE desktop, but the error I'm getting is

(edited log to be complete)

I tried to roll back the kernel and nvidia drivers, but the nvidia drivers refuse to downgrade with the error "unresolvable
dependencies"

I'm not sure where to go from here.

Thanks

Re: Cannot load desktop after update

There's no error in that excerpt, don't do manual ocr's upload actual text:  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … in_clients

But you are potentially running into this issue other people have with the current nvidia drivers: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=265612

Downgrading the kernel and the nvidia drivers should work, which exact command did you try and what exact error did you get? You need to pass all "participants" in a single transaction so you'd do something like

pacman -U linux nvidia nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils nvidia-settings

Re: Cannot load desktop after update

Thanks @V1del

I have downgraded many times over the years, so I was familiar with adding everything at once, but somehow I missed the nvidia-utils package. Once I added that to the list, it downgraded without issue.

It's been so long since the nvidia driver failed that I forgot how many packages needed downgraded. Not sure if all of these were needed, but listing them in case it helps anyone else.

linux
linux-headers
linux-lts
nvidia
nvidia-dkms
nvidia-lts
nvidia-settings
nvidia-utils
opencl-nvidia
