Re: Updating a very old installation

Pacman-static could be used to work around that, but in 2011 archlinux still used initscripts and kernel version was still in 2.6.x .
Check https://archlinux.org/news/?page=1 and also page 2 and 3 to see the changes that were made in archlinux in that decade.

The amount of work needed to process all those changes and the risks of things breaking beyond repair is so huge I would start from scratch.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

The first issue, visible in your log, is tls. Try to sync with http or rsync mirrors instead of https.

Re: Updating a very old installation

Thank you for your replies
both are very helpful
I am getting pacman-static
its just an experiment ( for learning as well ) to prove that if dont properly arch can be ( with difficulties I know ) upgraded from older versions to current

(database is incorrect version: /var/lib/pacman/)
try running pacman-db-upgrade

tried pacman-db-upgrade many times but does not help

Re: Updating a very old installation

This is from before the /lib merge, and the /bin merge. You're going to have to reinstall.

Re: Updating a very old installation

Since it is an experiment to learn, the right way to flawlessly update an ancient installation is via:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux_Archive
so that one can perform updates in little steps.
Edit:
Maybe it is not enough, it starts from 2013

Re: Updating a very old installation

Does the experiment consider whether data not used or needed for 10 years is still needed, or why data cannot be recovered independent of updating?
Is this an issue of saving a custom configuration?
One normally conducts experiments because there is a functional purpose. What is it?

If the OP thinks it's worth doing, that's a perfectly good reason.

Trying to get the OP to focus on the intention of the experiment. I don't have to like the reason.

Re: Updating a very old installation

Thanks for all the posts , I am carefully following each step . it is a hard task , no doubt

I have two aims

Yes I want to preserve configuration of a long abandoned distro
To prove ( to myself ) that arch linux can be upgraded from decade old ISO

I might fail but no harm in trying

Re: Updating a very old installation

I thought upgrade scripts kept all changes to every update since beggining of times, kind of like the Bitcoin. Probe me wrong.
