[SOLVED] GNOME Wayland - no dual screen setup possible

Hello all,

this is my first request for help after 7 years of using Arch. So far the great Wiki and this Forum always helped me out! Thanks for that!

Now I am facing problems to set up my dual screen setup in the GNOME Settings under Wayland, which I was not able to solve after hours if trying.

  • 2 days ago GDM stopped working.

  • After detaching the 2nd screen, it works.

  • Disabled GDM, re-attached 2nd screen, booted, tried to start GDM manually, no success. The terminal text stays on the screen, a mouse cursor is visible and can be moved, but I cannot log in.

  • Enabled LightDM, restarted, works.

  • Setting GDM to use X works. Same in GNOME under X, setup of 2 screens works.

    cp ~/.config/monitors.xml /var/lib/gdm/.config/

to set up GDM under X for both screens woks.

  • Disabled DMs, tried to start GNOME Wayland manually. Got this error message

    bash: append_path: command not found

    . This helped:

     cp /etc/profile.pacnew /etc/profile

I thought that's it, but unfortunately not.

  • Setting up only 1 out of both screens under Wayland works. So, currently I only use my large screen, the laptop screen is black.

  • On this journey I removed all Kernel Parameters in GRUB, removed all fancy plymouth stuff, early KMS start for i915 is set. No error messages during boot. GNOME is fully reset to defaults.

With this single screen setup of GNOME and GDM I can boot and log in through GDM. But I am not able to set a dual screen set up - changing screen positions, resolutions, scaling. When changing scaling, the "preview" in the setting dialog does not change it's size, which it normally should do. When clicking on Save, the screen freezes and returns back to the previous settings after the standard 15s waiting time.

What can I do?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME Wayland - no dual screen setup possible

Add MUTTER_DEBUG_USE_KMS_MODIFIERS=0 to /etc/environment solves the problem for me.

Thank you so much, archtmp! This helped! Finally! Weird that I didn't find this during all my googling.

Short addition: the latest update of Mutter solves the issue as well.
