frugalware and puppylinux should also be mentioned :-)
Frugalware wouldn't work on a Pentium, it's -march=i686.

Thanks all for you recent input.
I tend to agree with PingFloyd on the merits of Debian. Also, installing and configuring Debian made me learn many things on GNU/Linux and realize again how "lightweight and simple" is Arch.
I have experimented various DE/WMS. For what it's worth, my best compromise so far is xfce (compromise between performance and simplicity, taking into account my initial goals).
