Issues starting X after upgrade

After upgrading my packages I ran into a permission error when trying to start X. I tried reverting to the previously installed versions of the kernel and my graphics drivers (nvidia) but that didn't solve the issue.

When I run "xinit" the relevant error message that I get is:

"(EE) xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 2 (Permission denied)"

The server then terminates. I can partially get around this using chown on /dev/tty2, but "xinit" then just hangs (showing a "_" cursor on a black screen). The ownership of the file also reset after reboot -- so I think I need to fix some underlying issue.

I've google this a bit and it seems like this kind of permission error is common, but I could not find anything that helped me identify the cause, or get past the blank screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help -- that first issue (adding suid bit to /usr/lib/Xorg.wrap) solved the permission problem. But now X11 just hangs after starting (same as I saw when I manually changed the tty permissions) -- I simply see a black screen with a "_" cursor in the top right corner. I'm unable to anything at that point (e.g. switch to another virtual terminal) and have to reboot.

An update: I downgraded my kernel and nvidia drivers to a previous version (5.11.6 for linux, 460.56 for nvidia) and I can now start X. So whatever the problem is it is an nvidia driver problem (whose solution is likely that I just have to wait until it gets fixed).
