[SOLVED] Suspend issues with linux >5.9 and xps 9310

I'm on a Dell XPS 9310, i7 32GB, BIOS v1.1.4 -  Standard version, not Developer Edition (ie. had windows before wiping the drive and the AX500 wireless chipset).

The last 5.9 kernel I used linux-5.9.14.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst works fine for suspend.  All 5.10+ kernels that I've used suspend fails.  I'm currently running linux-5.11.16.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

By fail, the last thing in the boot log is "kernel: PM: suspend entry (s2idle)".  The screen goes black (turns off as expected) but the keyboard back light stays on, and the system is non responsive.  Only hard shutdown (holding power button) can recover.

The only change in behavior I can get is by modifying acpi_osi to *not* be "Windows 2015".  In that case the keyboard back light turns off, but the system is non responsive and still requires hard shutdown.

I have disabled early signs of life in the bios. I am booting with UEFI using the excellent https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/arch-efiboot/

The only peripheral attached is an usb wireless dongle (waiting for linux 5.12 support for the built in wireless).  However, removing the wireless dongle does not affect the suspend behavior.

The wiki Suspend and hibernate troubleshooting section seems like the general issue I'm hitting.  But reads like there is no solution yet.

There have been many reports about the screen going black without easily viewable errors or the ability to do anything when going into and coming back from suspend and/or hibernate. These problems have been seen on both laptops and desktops. This is not an official solution, but switching to an older kernel, especially the LTS-kernel, will probably fix this.

Power info:

$ cat /sys/power/state
freeze mem disk
$ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
[s2idle]

With no ascp_osi specified, or "Windows 2015" the backlight stays on.

$ cat /proc/cmdline
root=PARTUUID=77c80a9b-4230-4038-8918-f84b47057cc7 rw initrd=\intel-ucode.img initrd=\initramfs-linux.img

With any other value (Windows 2013, Microsoft Windows NT, etc), or no value, the backlight turns off.

Here is some dmesg output, however if there is something more relevant to provide, do let me know.

Re: [SOLVED] Suspend issues with linux >5.9 and xps 9310

It sounds like they broke something in the kernel. You should bisect it to find the faulty commit and then report the bug at bugzilla.kernel.org or the appropriate mailing list.

Yes, I'll get to that, first looking to confirm with others on the issue, or workarounds.

Re: [SOLVED] Suspend issues with linux >5.9 and xps 9310

I have the same issue with my band new Thinkpad T14 (Ryzen 5). Some time it will fail to wake from suspend to RAM. Stay light, black screen.

I also noticed similar problems with my Dell Inspiron N411Z. I worked for several years flawlessly.

I think the issues started the first days of April. Can you confirm?

Alexander.

This is resolved with the new 5.12 kernel
