sound not working

hi everyone, i am new to arch and to this forum so i hope i am welcomed here however i have been using linux for a while, i am having a problem and i hope you can help me getting a solution for it, i installed arch, then installed gnome desktop, however the machine where i installed it is old and was lagging because of gnome,so i installed xfce and mate and removed gnome desktop, the sound was working till i deleted gnome, if i need to post the output of any command please tell me

Are you using alsa? Do you have the mixer turned up, and unmuted? alsamixer is part of alsa-utils. What is the output of amixer?
Does the hardware work?

speaker-test -c 2

sorry for not answering that long, it was muted in the terminal, i was using alsa and i found it was muted. thank you for your help
