Unable to Use External Hard Drive with USB/IP

I'm having issues with using USB Hard drives when using USB/IP.
Everything appears to bind correctly however looking at dmesg I have these errors:

Re: Unable to Use External Hard Drive with USB/IP

PoE or external power supply?
Can you power the disk USB/IP adapter other than PoE (in case)?

Re: Unable to Use External Hard Drive with USB/IP

The Hard Drive is plugged into a USB port on a laptop that is connected to my network with Ethernet. I am trying to access it on another laptop also connected to the same network. Sorry if this wasn't clear. The light on the drive is flashing slowly.

Re: Unable to Use External Hard Drive with USB/IP

Is the device usable (does it spin up) on the remote laptop? (Ie. can you mount it there)?
What's the USB/IP server? Linux? Same kernel?
You're not trying to use the driver otherwise on the USB/IP server?

Sanity check: There's certainly a very good and important reason why you don't share the drive with a remote file system protocol which is far more efficient, versatile and flexible than the USB/IP approach?

Re: Unable to Use External Hard Drive with USB/IP

Thanks for your quick reply

My end goal is to use Timeshift over the network. Unfortunately it appears only local drives are supported but my hope is that with USB/IP it should work. The drive works fine on the remote laptop. When I bind the device to usb/ip it is unmourned and cannot be used until I unbind it again on the remote laptop. I’m using Ubuntu 20.04 on the remote laptop with kernel 5.4 and arch linux on the local laptop with kernel 5.12.

Re: Unable to Use External Hard Drive with USB/IP

Timeshift looks like an rsync frontend?
It would seem weird to be limited to local/usb drives.

Anyway, I suspect something like usb autosuspend or the disk being moved to idle on the host.
Reason: Less power drawing devices work and the disk controller actually responds but then, when actually reading the disk, you get an error. I assume you can't hear/feel it spin up either?
Are there any error messages in the hosts dmesg?

Try to disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … utosuspend in the host ("usbcore.autosuspend=-1" for globally - nb. that userspace powermanagement tools can and will manipulate this value at runtime)

I added usbcore.autosuspend=-1 on my linux line in GRUB, It still doesn't seem to be work. Here is the output of dmseg for the host laptop:

Re: Unable to Use External Hard Drive with USB/IP

If you hav not tried it yet, unmount all partitions of the usb drive before binding it to usbip.

Maybe try to use NBD to remotely mount the disk instead of usb/ip. Tunnel it over ssh, wireguard or stunnel if you want to encrypt the transport.
