Lightdm Failure - no greeter

Hi all,

I forget exactly what broke lightdm but I put it down for a while and am only now picking it back up. I suspect I borked the nvidia drivers.

I have no greeter and lightdm doesn't start. I would be very grateful for any help!

I've tried to provide everything that was asked here

lightdm --test-mode --debug

systemctl status lightdm

lightdm.log

lspci

dmesg

pacman.log

Xorg.0.log

startx

also ran

systemctl edit lightdm

added

[Service]
Environment=SYSTEMD_LOG_LEVEL=debug

then

journalctl -u lightdm.service -f

and the output is essentially the same as

systemctl status lightdm

You generated a config using nvidia-xconfig that is incompatible with your hybrid setup?
dmesg contains the output of lspci so I can not see if there is any output from the nvidia module failing to load.

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

Sounds like that may have been it, this problem came up a while ago so my memory is sketchy here.

Don't know what a hybrid setup refers to.

So what do you recommend?

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

See NVIDIA_Optimus#Available_methods for your choices.
Please also post the output of dmesg as I mentioned the current link is to the output of lspci.

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

Thanks, sorry I get your meaning now. I've updated the dmesg link.

I'll give the methods a look-see.

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

Thanks for the dmesg.  The linux-lts kernel needs nvidia-lts or nvidia-dkms plus linux-lts-headers.

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

ok,

1) installed the nvidia-lts package.
2) startup with non-lts kernel

dmesg with non-lts kernel
startx with non-lts kernel
systemctl status lightdm with non-lts kernel is active! (also confirmed active with lts kernel after nvidia-lts install)
lightdm --test-mode --debug with non-lts kernel
Xorg.0.log with non-lts kernel

still no greeter

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

xorg.conf is still being used.

[    11.619] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

If that was generated by nvidia-xconfig it will require the display is attached to the GPU.  The Xorg.0.log shows there is no display detected as being attached to the GPU.  So you are left with a blank screen.

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

Thanks loqs for your reply. Sorry for the tardiness.

How can I get Xorg to see my monitor? This is a laptop, I can't have physically disconnected it.

loqs wrote:

Should I expect to be using some different config file?

The laptop has two GPUs.  One connected to the screen the other not.

There is also the default of not using any config file and using auto detection.
See the link I proved in post #4.  You have to decide how you want the two GPUs to be used and follow the appropriate steps.

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

Thanks loqs!

Ok so I moved the config files and this worked. I now have a greeter and can log into gnome successfully.

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.moved
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.moved

However...

Before resorting to autodetection I had read that using the discrete gpu only would provide better performance and reduced battery, but given that my laptop is almost always plugged in, I wanted performance.

I have looked over that the wiki in post #4 and had previously tried the following.
1) create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
2) add the two xrandr lines to ~/.xinitrc

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

LightDM specific instructions
3) add those same lines to /etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh
4) make the script executable

chmod +x /etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh
rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 78 May 20 20:51 /etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh

5) uncomment the line [Seat:*] from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
6) add

display-setup-script=/etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh

just below [Seat:*]
7) Reboot ->Still no greeter. Still errors with startx.

I'm still confused as to what I'm missing there and while it's a win to have my arch laptop making windows, I would also like to understand why it didn't work and how to achieve what I set out to do!

Thanks again for your help!

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

oh, in posting that last bit, I realized that my ~/.xinitrc did not have a shebang in it...

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

If you restart lightdm does it then work?  If not please post an updated /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Re: Lightdm Failure - no greeter

sudo systemctl restart lightdm

does work. It logs out and reloads the greeter.

Note: This was after adding in the shebang (see post above)
