xdg-desktop-portal screensharing is incredibly slow

Hey there,

since zoom screensharing seems to got broken since gnome 40.1 I had a look at pipewire and xdg-desktop-portal again. I still has the same problem why I avoided using it in the first place.

Performance. It is not a screenshare, this would be an insult. It is a picture by picture. Honestly, I can do faster produce screenshots and upload them than xdg-desktop-portal does in updating them... .

So I suspect something must be wrong, it can't be that bad right? Framerate is probably something around 1 frame every 2-3 seconds or so. However I couldn't find any settings to tune for either pipewire or xdg-desktop-portal, so I am asking here if anyone knows?

Just tested with the built in video recorder of gnome (cntrl+shift+alt+r) and it has nice fluid framerate. so... not sure what is wrong

Open dconf, go to org/gnome/mutter/experimental-features and enable the ['dma-buf-screen-sharing'] (comma separated if you have any other)

ok got quite a bit better with that setting, still not comparable to zooms performance before 40.1 on wayland and still stuttering, but I guess that is due to me being on a mobile processor with a 4k display and a missing friendly codec for the video since it seems to send the screenshare in a very high quality. framerate now is however way better, big screen updates still take some time, but working on code is somewhat ok to watch (not really fluid and still worse performance than gnomes built in video recording)

That might be because it is not using hardware acceleration. I don't know about Zoom, sorry.

zoom is still broken even with that setting. so also don't know, they lately patched something and now there is not even a selection anymore.

however concerning hardware acceleration, i was testing the browser integration (firefox) of xdg-desktop-portal, is that a setting in firefox or somewhere else that i can try to tune?

yah have those all already for long, but hey don't help, but with chromium it seems to perform little better.
