tiling window manager with selective window position

Hello

I'm finally switching to a tiling window manager and I'm currently comparing all options.

One thing I've never seen anyone mention about any of them, is the ability to select where a certain window will spawn on the grid. Something like window position memory. You make a config that a certain window spawns at a certain position within your chosen grid, and it always spawns there, moving the rest of the stack around.

Example: mpv spawning always on top right quarter

Does such a feature exist?

Thanks

Re: tiling window manager with selective window position

For i3, maybe something like this in the config would work:

for_window [class="^mpv$"] move up; move right; move up; move right; move up; move right

That's supposed to be like manually hitting the hotkeys for moving a window right and up three times each when an "mpv" class window shows up. I'm not using i3 right now so I can't make sure that this works like I'm imagining.

Re: tiling window manager with selective window position

Tiling window managers typically use the entire screen whereas you seem to want that the mpv window only occupies a quarter of the screen at most even if it is the only window. You can probably tweak bspwm to do what you want but why?

Seams like a clever trick. Sub-optimal, but could get it done I guess.

I do want mpv at a quarter screen. To me, it makes no sense having it any other size. Here's why:
   - If it's the only window, and it is the only thing you wanna look at, you still need to press a key to go fullscreen (and not look at the status bar);
   - if it spawns in half screen (2 windows), it's wasted space, because most videos are 16:9 or 21:9, so you don't benefit from the extra window size;
   - If it spawns in a size lower than a quarter, I find that too small to watch something while working on other windows.

So a quarter of a standard widescreen is close to perfect. Having it always in the same position just makes a bit more sense. As it makes sense to have certain programs that you only have 1 window at a time spawn always on the same spot, you will automatically know where to look for what you want.

From the replies, I assume that it is a nonexistent or, at the very least, uncommon feature. Also not something people do a lot. I guess I won't be choosing a wm based on that. Thanks

Re: tiling window manager with selective window position

xfwm4, although not an auto-tiling window manager, has various actions to tile windows to top, bottom, left, right, top-left, top-right, bottom-left or bottom-right.  The shortcuts to trigger these actions are configurable in Settings/Window Manager/Keyboard in Xfce.

Or, use the mpv --geometry parameter to specify the initial window position or size.  See man mpv.

For other programs a similiar --geometry option may be available.  See man 7 X.
