Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

My system doesn't boot with Kernel 5.12.1, I was able to "fix" it by downgrading to version 5.11.16. After the GRUB screen it quickly shows a few lines before it transitions to blank black screen (no cursor). To me it doesn't appear to be a problem with the display manager (SDDM in my case) since I can't even boot into a terminal (runlevel 3). I am well aware that this isn't enough information for a bug report, that's why I am asking what I should do. Is this a known issue and should therefor wait for a new Kernel version or should I write a bug report (if so, what information would be needed)
Cheers

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

Assuming an intel gpu, there are quite a few reports on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues  so check whether you can follow one of those, though I do not see one with definite developer interaction yet

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/inte … ote_912754 indicates that acca7762eb71 might fix this. I haven't tried. Probably will wait.

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

This seems to be the exact same problem I've been experiencing as well. Hopefully they fix it soon.

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

Same issue here. I can't boot any 5.12.x kernel. The screen doesn't turn black, I can see a few lines of output (including some errors as described in this ticket) and it freezes the moment it tries to switch video mode (hard freeze, I have to power off as nothing else works). If I pass `nomodeset` I can boot to text mode.

My laptop is an Asus X509JA and I just upgraded the BIOS to latest version (306), but that didn't make a difference.

I'm staying on 5.10 (LTS) for now, but looking forward for a solution..

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

It's not the 5.12 kernel. It's been happening on the newest install medium which uses 5.11. I thought it was freezing but it's a display problem, I can type in commands blind and they work.

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

@felixculpa — if it were a display issue, I would assume Ctrl-Alt-Del would reboot, but it doesn't..  Perhaps we encounter different issues.  Also, I'm pretty sure it's about 5.12, iirc 5.11 used to work fine (I can't test it at the moment, though).

EDIT: I was wrong about Ctrl-Alt-Del, it seems it does work, I just have to switch to a virtual terminal before (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F2).  Nothing changes on screen, it's frozen, but Ctrl-Alt-Del does trigger a reboot, so I'd guess the machine itself is alive.  I still didn't found a solution, staying on the LTS kernel for now.

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

I have a similar (same?) problem.  My setup is a recent new build desktop from about a month ago (Intel i3-10320 on MSI MAG B560 Torpedo) and it occurred from the outset, not after upgrading the kernel.  I think it is originating with the integrated gpu on the Intel chip (Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU) and the i915 driver.  My other machines which have older Intel GPUs or are AMD or ARM do not have this problem.  Incidentally, on my problem machine, this problem occurs regardless of distro or kernel version -- I have booted from various archived distros I keep on USBs and have the same problem.

P.S. The demsg | grep drm ends with these two statements, the last of which may be related to the problem:

[    2.575868] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20201103 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0
[    2.577591] i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

It looks like the comments in https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/inte … ote_912754 indicates that acca7762eb71 resolved this.  Any ideas when this will make its way into 5.12 kernel package update?

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

That fix was backported to the Arch kernel in 5.12.4-arch2: https://git.archlinux.org/linux.git/com … 50a910b4e2

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

Arch only needed to carry it for that one release as it was applied to 5.12.5 in https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … 59c83a87ba

Re: Blackscreen after update to Kernel 5.12.1

Ah, I've been suppressing my kernel packages for a while now waiting for the fix.  Just updated and everything is gravy again.  Thanks!
