I want to connect my laptop (Lenovo Z50-75) to my Samsung TV, and I used this:
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 1920x1080, and the display works fine, but I get no audio from the TV and instead it is played via my laptop speaker. I tried
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --set audio onand it gives no errors.

Also muting my laptop speaker and restarting pulseaudio didn't work.

Have you opened pavucontrol and looked in the Configuration and Output Devices tabs to see if the relevant device is on the correct profile, activated and pointing at the right port? In my case, my graphics card is set to the "HDMI / DisplayPort (plugged in)" port in Output Devices, and in Configurations, to the profile "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output" for my primary monitor or "Digital Stereo (HDMI 4) Output" for my secondary monitor. Why 4? I have no idea, but it works.
You could also check if your device isn't muted in alsamixer (from the alsa-utils package) or look in your DE's System Settings (or equivalent) to see if everything is pointing where it should. For example, in KDE, you'd want to look in System Settings > Hardware > Audio and in System Settings > Hardware > Audio > Configure. Other DEs probably have these settings in an equally intuitive location.
I hope this helps.
