In latest -Syu, I now have .sig files in /var/cache/pacman/pkg which I didn't before. I didn't notice anything about this in the new pacman.conf.
Is this expected? And are they necessary? I know they're only a few kb each, but if there's something to tweak that prevents them from being downloaded and taking up space I'd like to know.
btw: One of the things I like about pacman is that it doesn't ever seem to change (and I've been using Arch for 10 years now!), but I must say I really like the new "totals" display with the parallel downloads.

That has always been an option that you could enable in pacman.conf, it just can't be disabled anymore.

Since Arch started using signatures, they've been stored in the database, so you always had the sigs for all packages taking up space. The new way (not fully implemented yet) is to download the individual sigs for the packages when you download them. Right now, it's both, but the databases should be shrinking significantly in the future.

Correct - the few kb you lose now will likely be saved in a single -Sy in 6 months.
