Corrupted VLC video

I haven't used VLC player in a few months, and I know it did work - but upon playing an avi file, it is all corrupted.  I can't find a solution and was hoping someone knew what the fix for this is or how to troubleshoot?

Try disabling HW accelerated decoding in the settings.

Is it definitely VLC that's the problem and not a corrupted file?

Have you tried the same file with different players or different files with VLC?
