[SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

Hi,

I did a fresh archlinux installation today and then go to LXDE desktop environment. Mainly installed lxde, lxdm, xorg, xorg-apps, lxrandr. However the problem when I log into the graphical interface and tries to open "Monitor Settings", the following error appears. It also pops up when I execute lxrandr inside the terminal.

Unable to get monitor information!

I tires to remove and re-install xorg, xorg-apps, lxrandr yet no any success.

Help from you guys very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

What's the output of "xrandr -q"?
Also post your xorg log.

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

Please use code tags, not quote tags (edit your post to make)

The post /etc/X11/xorg.conf but the reason is that this is a virtual machine, there's no "monitor" - lxrandr should™ not fail but there's also not much to configure there.
What's your actual intention?

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

I will update my previous code with correct code tags...

Yes, its a virtual machine on top of virtualBox 6.1.

My intension is to work archlinux with LXDE desktop as I have a MacOS in my Laptop.

Can you give my any clue to get this working.

Thanks

Ok, but what does that have to do w/ lxrandr?

If you just want to change the resolution, try eg.

xrandr --output Virtual-1 --mode 1360x768

but the "preferred" mode is determined by the virtualbox window.

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

Simply I want to change the screen resolution by going to Preference > "Monitor Settings". The reason I executed lxrandr is because some document refer that command to access "Monitor Settings" just from the console itself. Normally we should be able to change these monitor setting in the Preference > "Monitor Settings". But  unfortunately for over my system, when i do that, I get this error
Unable to get monitor information!

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

Yes. Because there is no monitor.
You could try to trick lxrandr, I assume it doesn't like the 0mm x 0mm thing,
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-monitor.conf

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Virtual-1"
    DisplaySize  320 180
EndSection

nb. that this might conflict w/ the xorg.conf you didn't post.

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

One thing I noticed is that I dont see any monitor.conf in my system in both /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ nor /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ location.

Also I created a xorg.conf.d/11-monitor.conf file and put the context you have given, but its not get the resolution working correct.

I guess the reason being of not having monitor.conf in my system(or not it generated automatically in the first place) is the possible cause of this problem. What do you think.

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

No, it's normal to not have random configuration files around.
The source of your problem is that your "monitor" is the virtualbox window. It's not a monitor.

What's the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the updated output of "xrandr -q"?

its not get the resolution working correct

What gets us perhaps closer to what you want to do. What is the "correct" resolution?
(Again, the entire  thing is driven by the virtualbox window - I assume it's going to change if you run it in fullscreen mode?)

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

The xorg log in #3 disagrees:

[     7.680] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Fri Jun  4 09:06:49 2021

[     7.680] (**) |-->Input Device "Mouse0"
[     7.680] (**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard0"

The configlet you supposingly added has no impact on the xrandr output - which is weird.
=> updated xorg log?

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

/etc/X11/xorg.conf is gone, but the DisplaySize parameter is absent or ignored as well (I assume /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-monitor.conf is still there?)
You'll have to file a bug, https://sourceforge.net/p/lxde/bugs/ and until then won't be able to use lxrandr to configure the output.

One thing you could still try would be to

xrandr --setmonitor TheMonitor 1920/320x1080/180+0+0  Virtual-1

and see how lxrandr behaves afterwards.

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

I finally found the fix for my problem.

@seth I like to thank for all the support you gave me on this thread and I know it was your valuable time. Without your guidance I never be able to see this through.

Yes, the reason I get the subjected error is because the system itself didn't have a monitor detected when it boots-up and therefore, it is obvious "Display Setting" application will through such error statement.
When @seth mentioned about a problem of my virtual machine Monitor, It just came to my mind that not loading enough kernel Modules cause system to undetected the virtual monitor. Then right-away I move to install VBox Guest Additional by pacman -S virtualbox-guest-utils . Then as soon as I reboot it, I could successfully launch "Display Settings" for the first time and yes of course now see the monitor detected inside of it.

Hope this will help someone if they get into this same error.

Many thanks to Seth.
- cheers -

Re: [SOLVED] LXDE - Unable to get monitor information!

Good to know that the guest utils are required for this.

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
