Sound not working at all

Hello,

I have a problem. Sound is not working with any applications. I use KDE. The sound button on the keyboard is permanently on, which suggests the sound is off, but if I press it, the little "Audio muted" popup does change from muted to unmuted. I can also adjust the volume, because the little sound bar goes up and down but to no effect because I can't hear anything.

Unmuted? How about the speaker test? aplay -l? Did you make an ~/.asoundrc?

I just installed whatever came when I installed KDE plasma. So Pulse audio. I have no ~/.asoundrc.

The headphones work when plugged in. When I take off while alsamixer is on, I see the expected toggle of speaker and headphones and the speaker shows the '00' in green with volume to the maximum but still no sound .
