A2DP sink profile is unavailable

Hello! My bluetooth headphones are always set to the "Headset Head Unit (HSP/HFP)" profile, resulting in very poor sound quality. Setting them as A2DP sink would solve the issue, but the A2DP sink profile is unavailable as pactl confirms:

pactl list | grep -C2 A2DP

Profiles:
headset_head_unit: Headset Head Unit (HSP/HFP) (sinks: 1, sources: 1, priority: 30, available:yes)
a2dp_sink: High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink) (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 40, available: no)
off: Off (sinks: 0, sources: 0, priority: 0, available: yes)
Active Profile: headset_head_unit

The same exact issue is troubleshooted on the Arch wiki, but none of the solutions worked for me. I also tried using pipewire, but the issue remained. The headphones worked fine (the A2DP profile was available on both pulseaudio and pipewire) a few months back on a different Arch machine. They also work fine on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (live) on the same machine. Any ideas?

P.S.: dmesg provides the following output, I don't know if it has to do with the issue:

hci0: urb 00000000171613fa submission failed (90)
hci0: sending frame failed (-90)
hci0: SCO packet for unknown connection handle 0
hci0: SCO packet for unknown connection handle 48
hci0: SCO packet for unknown connection handle 257

Kernels tested: 5.10.43-1-lts, 5.12.10-zen1-1

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

Same here! I've just spent a lot of time on things and couldn't figure out what's going on. I don't see that I've installed new version of pulseaudio nor bluez. I've tried latest kernel and latest LST kernel (currently running the LTS version), and it doesn't help. In 98% of the cases A2DP is unavailable no matter what I do. I get it available maybe 2 or 3 times during the whole day, it was random, and it disappeared immediately after disconnect/reconnect of the headphones.
I have PXC 550 headphones and this USB bluetooth adapter:

Bus 003 Device 004: ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)

I've also tried installing pulseaudio-modules-bt, but the result is the same:

pactl list | grep -C2 A2DP
        Profiles:
headset_head_unit: Headset Head Unit (HSP/HFP) (sinks: 1, sources: 1, priority: 30, available: yes)
a2dp_sink_sbc: High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink: SBC) (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 40, available: no)
a2dp_sink_aac: High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink: AAC) (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 40, available: no)
a2dp_sink_aptx: High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink: aptX) (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 40, available: no)
a2dp_sink_aptx_hd: High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink: aptX HD) (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 40, available: no)
a2dp_sink_ldac: High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink: LDAC) (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 40, available: no)
off: Off (sinks: 0, sources: 0, priority: 0, available: yes)
        Active Profile: headset_head_unit

I've tried fresh Manjaro and Pop OS (live USB stick), and on both the A2DP works fine. Manjaro seems to be running 5.10 kernel and A2DP works fine with or without pulseaudio-modules-bt. Adding pulseaudio-modules-bt also enables aptX which also works fine.

I'm currently on 5.10.43-1-lts, pulseaudio 14.2-3, gnome-shell 1:40.2-1, pulseaudio-modules-bt-git 1:14.2.r149.dbb5164-1 and running lightdm as DM (just mentioning it because arch wiki mentions some GDM-specific bugs). I also tried switching to KDE Plasma (it was a long shot), the result is the same.

Any ideas would be welcome, mostly new ideas on what to test/debug and/or what to try to downgrade.

I do have a similar dmesg error as MinePro120, not sure if it's relevant or not:

[ 77.331185] Bluetooth: hci0: urb 00000000acc46ae7 submission failed (90)
[ 77.331187] Bluetooth: hci0: sending frame failed (-90)

P.S. I'm not sure exactly when the issue started. I've had to repair my headset almost daily for the past month. I just attributed it to a random bug and waited for a fix, but as it never came I decided to try to remove /var/lib/bluetooth to see if that will help. After that I've lost A2DP, not sure if it's connected in any way.

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

Oh wow! I’m having the same issue. I just did a fresh install of arch last night and had no issues with my bt headphones since I got them 8 months ago. Now I have the same problem and was thinking it was a configuration issue on my end but I’ve done everything the OP has done as well and no success. I’ll add info when I’m back at my computer tomorrow.

Did you check for those kernel errors? I have a feeling they are indicative of the issue, since I only encounter them when the A2DP profile is unavailable. I never got the A2DP profile to be available btw, out of the 20+ times I tried. Also, the fact that the issue appears on both pipewire and pulse, tells me the audio server isn't to blame, right? I just got the profile working under those versions from a live USB:

pipewire 0.3.27
linux-zen 5.12.1-zen2-1-zen
bluez 5.58-1
bluetooth-support 1-3

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

Having the same problem here, with AirPods Pros using Pipewire. I tested it with the current kernel (5.12) and the LTS kernel (5.10). It works with another pair of BT earphones, but not with the AirPods. It did work on Ubuntu though; thus having the same experience as @MinePro120.

I can connect to the AirPods (although it is a bit sketchy) and I also see the A2DP-profile available in the settings. However, as soon as I try to switch to the profile, the audio-output disappears.

I created a reddit-thread on this topic, but didn't get any feedback there. I included a gif of me trying to connect to the AirPods and switch profiles. You can see the thread here.

Very interesting that it works with other headphones. I don't have another pair to test unfortunately. Anyway, some updates:
1) By downgrading pipewire and bluez (and their associated packages) to the aforementioned versions, the issue was NOT affected. The kernel messages disappeared after that though (even after upgrading again).
2) I'm losing my patience :-P. Nothing seems to be problematic since all the components work in one system or another.

Edit: I've also copied pipewire configs from working systems (live USB) to my system, but that didn't work either.
Edit #2: I followed every possible solution mentioned on the arch wiki before posting, everybody did the same, right?

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

A small update from me - I got it working. I have downgraded whole system to the version from 1st of May using https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/202 … o/os/$arch

It didn't work out the best, there were some dependency issues, but was good enough for testing. After the downgrade, A2DP still didn't work, which got me even more confused. Repairing didn't help. However, after removing /var/lib/bluetooth, A2DP works fine. I've tried reconnecting 5 times and it's working without any issues. I have no idea why it's working, though... I'll try upgrading system again to the latest package versions and see if it keeps working without repairing.

Fantastic information, thank you!  I have not checked for those kernel errors, but I will tonight when I get home.  I just wanted to throw my experience in so if there's enough traction we/I know it's not a configuration issue, which seems likely.  I am running the stock kernel, but no harm in switching to zen if it's what works.

just a heads up you can run

sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/<pkgname>

to roll back specific packages.  I've never used the method you're talking about but for something as small as bluetooth issues it would probably be worth it to just run the

pacman -U

command to target those specific packages.

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

@nanu thanks, I know about this. I tried downgrading pulseaudio, pulseaudio-modules-bt, pulseaudio-bluetooth, bluez and bluez-utils and it still didn't work. I thought it was not working because some other package was affecting it, so I decided to try and downgrade all of the system packages. Now that it's working, I'll try again downgrading specific package and removing /var/lib/bluetooth, as that seems to be crucial to getting it working again.

That's not exactly the case; those were just the versions on a working live USB I tried. I tried the same exact versions on my installation (using "downgrade" from the AUR, fantastic piece of software) and it still didn't work. Also, removing "/var/lib/bluetooth" didn't work for me (on the latest versions though).

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

I've solved it, hope the fix will work for all of you as well. So after I've downgraded whole system to packages from May the 1st, removed /var/lib/bluetooth, A2DP started working fine. After that I've upgraded my system fully to the latest version and A2DP has continued working fine. I've disconnected, reconnected my headphones without any issues, even unpaired and paired. I've rebooted the system after the upgrade (just to be sure) and everything still worked. However, as soon as I've removed /var/lib/bluetooth, restarted bluetooth service and repaired my headphones, A2DP was gone.

To get it back working, I've downgraded the following libraries:

warning: downgrading package bluez (5.59-2 => 5.58-1)
warning: downgrading package bluez-libs (5.59-2 => 5.58-1)
warning: downgrading package bluez-utils (5.59-2 => 5.58-1)

restarted the bluetooth service and it DIDN'T work. However, as soon as I've removed /var/lib/bluetooth and paired headphones again, A2DP started working fine again.

So the fix should be - downgrade bluez package, remove /var/lib/bluetooth and re-pair. It should work after that.

A little bit more digging:
I was sure that /var/lib/bluetooth didn't contain anything useful so I ignored it at first. But it seems that /var/lib/bluetooth/ADAPTER_MAC/cache/DEVICE_MAC file is used when connecting to a device to decide which capabilities the device has. That's why A2DP worked fine when I've upgraded from old bluez to the new one (as long as I didn't remove that folder).

Here's are both working and broken files, if anyone is interested. There are difference under both ServiceRecords and Endpoints:

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

That may be worth a bug report to bluez.

So the fix should be - downgrade bluez package, remove /var/lib/bluetooth and repair. It should work after that.

OMG that works at last! That is indeed worth mentioning to the bluez team!

Yeah, definitely, I just wanted to hear if the fix works for someone else. I've opened a bug report here: https://github.com/bluez/bluez/issues/157

@knovoselic

This (downgrade, remove old profile) worked for me, thank you so much!

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

I'm glad I could help smile The fix for this particular issue is currently in bluez-git, so installing bluez-git will also work, but you still have to remove /var/lib/bluetooth first.

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

Can also report that upgrading everything to latest (removing /var/lib/bluetooth), but using bluez-git fixed it for me as well (ASDP Sink available for Sony WH-1000XM3 with pulse).

For anyone interested, these are the relevant libraries I have installed:

> $ pacman -Qs "pulse|blue"
local/bluez-git 1:5.59.r10.g864d03727-1
Libraries and tools for the Bluetooth protocol stack
local/hidapi 0.10.1-1
Simple library for communicating with USB and Bluetooth HID devices
local/libcanberra 0.30+2+gc0620e4-4
A small and lightweight implementation of the XDG Sound Theme Specification
local/libldac 2.0.2.3-1
    LDAC Bluetooth encoder library
local/libpulse 14.2-3
A featureful, general-purpose sound server (client library)
local/pavucontrol 1:4.0-2
    PulseAudio Volume Control
local/pulseaudio 14.2-3
    A featureful, general-purpose sound server
local/pulseaudio-alsa 1:1.2.5-2
    ALSA Configuration for PulseAudio
local/pulseaudio-bluetooth 14.2-3
    Bluetooth support for PulseAudio
local/sbc 1.5-2
    Bluetooth Subband Codec (SBC) library

Thanks again for the effort of the bug reporters / contributors.

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

Just wanted to chime in that I also had this issue with Bose QC II, tried switching from pipewire to pulseaudio and that did not fix it, so I went back to pipewire. Thought it was my headphones so I purchased a different pair, the Sony WH-1000XM4. Same issue. Ooops.

For me, I was missing all profiles except HSP. This thread helped me fix the issue (but now I have another one). Here are ALL THE STEPS TO FIX this issue:

- unpair all bluetooth devices
- sudo downgrade bluez bluez-utils (choose 5.58 for both - if you don't have downgrade installed (aur), install it via sudo paru -S downgrade first or just use pacman -U /var/cache/pkg/<bluez and bluez-util 5.58 here>)
- sudo systemctl stop bluetooth.service
- sudo rm /var/lib/bluetooth -rf
- sudo systemctl reboot

After reboot, pair your device. It should now work.

If you did not use downgrade, make sure to add bluez and bluez-utils to IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf otherwise you'll upgrade both to their broken versions when doing pacman -Syu

FYI: I also had random bluetooth reconnects. Found out that it was a bug in linux-firmware that had been fixed re. my motherboard's bluetooth chipset - however, rebooting multiple times after upgrading did not help. I had to shutdown, turn off power supply, take out the power cable and wait > 30 seconds. Unlike a restart, this wiped the firmware memory off the bluetooth chipset.

Thank you very much!

This solved my problem after spending hours of editing /etc/bluetooth/main.conf and /etc/pulse/default.pa !

Re: A2DP sink profile is unavailable

Upgrading to bluez-git and remove content of /var/lib/bluetooth solved these issues for me. Which commit was it that saved the day...?
