Since yesterday, some wine games are having unsual poor performance

Hello guys,

Until June 15, I was happily playing my games on wine, but after something of which I still don't know, most of my lutris and proton games simply stopped being playable with a few exceptions. Specifically, Call of duty modern warfare 2 (the old), Control, Kingdom come deliverance are slow even though I normally play them on my linux setup; although both GOG The Witcher 3 and Dark Souls III are still is running alright for some reason. Also I feel that my browsers (Firefox and qutebrowser) are a bit laggy. I've tested some games that are native to linux such as Albion Online and Xonotic, and both ran as expected but both are too lightweight to even count. So that is my problem.

Let me brief you in what I have already tested based on the wiki and my knowledge:
- I tested multiple wine and proton versions
- Multiple linux kernel versions with multiple cpu schedulers
- I checked my CPU frequency scaling and is set to performance
- I checked my CPU temperature and frequency during gaming, nothing unusual
- I checked my GPU p-states, it goes to 7 during gaming so it is not that I assume
- I checked my GPU usage during gaming, and even with lightweight games like call of duty mw2 it still goes to 100%
- I checked call of duty mw2 on windows to rule out hardware fault, and it runs just fine, same with other games I have there like jump force and assassin's creed origins
- I tested killing pulseaudio and ran the game to rule out pulseaudio interference
- I ran the game in a separate X server using xinit, it helped but not much

I at the ropes trying to fight back this issue but I am far too lost alone. Can someone help me investigate? I am not certain about what logs or commands output should I paste in here to help you help me, so please tell me that too.

My setup is as follows:
FX 6300
12 gb ram ddr3
rx 580 8gb
240gb ssd (root in one partition and windows on the other)
1tb hdd (/home, ext4)
2tb hdd (windows files drive, ntfs)
500 gb hdd (data, ext4)

EDIT: It was a hardwere issue after all. It turns out the problem was intermitent, so it was a bit harder to troubleshoot. My gpu card is experiencing bad contact in the pci express slot. I gave it a push and laid my pc down and it seems everything is fine for now!

Did the problem occur after a wine update?
If yes try to donwgrade  and see if the problem persist.
I know that downgrading is not a permanent solution, but if it is a problem with wine it could be fixed and later you can update wine without any problems.

Hey! So, there was one wine update, but only to the system wine, not to the proton and lutris wine. With that said I've tested multiple wine and proton versions and the problem holds. I only use the system wine for specific games, which were affected too.
Thx for your input still big_smile.

I suspect the problem lies elsewhere, not withing wine itself.

Does your GPU acceleration work properly? What are your outputs of

glxinfo -B

vulkaninfo

from (lib32-)mesa-demos and vulkaninfo packages respectively.

Re: Since yesterday, some wine games are having unsual poor performance

I`ve had a slight update on the matter. The tests of games that I did on windows were not very reliable. I tested different games from those on linux on the most part, so I couldn`t fully eliminate the hardware fault possibility.

I`ve tested call of duty mw2, which ran just fine on linux but got painfully slow, on windows and it ran almost just as poorly. With updated drivers and windows version, I have now a theory that it might be RAM related. I`ve tested GPU with unigine heaven benchmark and it ran fine as usual, also ran cod mw2 both on hdd and ssd to eliminate the possibility of it being a mechanical drive fault. Which lefts me with the possibility of it being a RAM issue. I`ll perform the Memtest86+ to know for sure either way.

EDIT: I solved the windows part of the issue by using ddu to cleaning up the drivers and reseating the gpu. However, it didn't solve the linux side of the problem. So I'm back to thinking it is a software side fault.
