[SOLVED] Putting (large) files on desktop

Hi,

I wanted to put a certain number of files (including large ones) on the desktop. I have heard before that it can slow down the computer (depending on the OS).
Is it the case for arch? Should I avoid doing so?

Thank you!

Re: [SOLVED] Putting (large) files on desktop

How large a file is should be irrelevant for plain directory content listings which is ultimately what the "desktop" is. If this is an actual problem will depend on the implementation of your desktop, what are you using here?

In general I'd say no this shouldn't be problematic. And this is easily reverted should you notice a slowdown.

What do you mean, like my desktop environment? I'm using KDE Plasma if that answers the question.
I read for example that on booting, some OS read everything thats on the desktop.

And? Do you use some OS or one particular OS? What does the respective article say about Arch Linux with the Plasma DE?
I suggest you choose your literature more carefully.

No it did not say anything about Arch and Plasma, that is why I am asking here smile

Well yes? If you have something on the desktop, then every time you boot that desktop the relevant information that needs to be shown to show you this information needs to be loaded. Depending on what exactly you want it might have to load different icons depending on file types or even thumbnails, both of these will usually be read out of a cache and not be regenerated on every boot. There's a lot of stuff that will happen here.

So yes, you will have a performance impact with 100% certainty. How large or whether you'd even notice that is something you'll only find out by doing it.
