FIFA 21 running through steam/proton-6.35 has bugged controller

First time using the forum so forgive me for any mistakes, but I can run FIFA absolutely fine like 2/5's of the time. I'm using a PS5 controller with "steam input" enabled. and 2/5 times the light will stay purple (my custom color for steam) and hence works fine and allows controller input. however sometimes it will return to blue (the desktop default when steam is not running.) in this case the controller when pressing (X) will instead press enter? acting like a keyboard. so when I get in game I have keyboard controls on.

As far as I can tell, this is the only non-steam steam game this has happened to me on (I have fifa on steam through ea play) however when running wine applications it seemingly doesn't notice my usb's plugged in so I'm not sure if that's two sides of the same coin there.

The only way I've found that fixes this bug, without full reboot is logging off or just killing any applications even remotely linked to steam/origin and hoping for the best
