Second screen not detected

Hello, I have previously used EndeavourOS and had no problem setting up dual monitor, since Xrandr detected de HDMI since the first time, however, in my new arch install with "archinstaller" and choosing nvidia propietary drivers this hasn't happened.

I have already read the wiki topics on it, and installed the proper nvidia drivers, however, whenever I run sudo nvidia-xconfig and  xorg.conf is created on /etc/X11, I can't even run startx, which otherwise I can, with the default xorg.conf.

In both cases, the HDMI isn't even detected by xrandr, and the cable and the entry itselves worked fine on previous installs.

Re: Second screen not detected

Most likely optimus system that you're running on the intel chip and the nvidia one being not used at all
=> "lspci -k" and xorg log?

Likely relevant:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start

Do not use nvidia-xconfig not other static server layouts (eg. Xorg -configure)  - they won't work w/ that setup.

Re: Second screen not detected

Remove "/root/xorg.conf.new" and don't run X11 as root anyway.
Also remove all xf86-video-* packages (you won't need them and they may complicate things)

Then post an updated Xorg log.
Since it is an optimus layout the two links in #2 are likely very relevant.

Re: Second screen not detected

a) There seem to be random line breaks??
b) use /etc/default/grub and grub-mkconfig, not /boot/grub/grub.cfg  - the file explicitly warns you to not do that
c) you didn't add any of the nvidia modules to mkinitcpio.cof

Ok, I made this and I got a kernel panic and had could finally fix it and go back to what I had previously.
The changes I made, after re-re-reading the articles you sent me were:

/etc/mkinitcpio.conf :

MODULES=(i915 nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm)
BINARIES=()
FILES=()
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect keyboard keymap modconf block filesystems fsc
k)

/etc/default/grub :

Note: In here I just added nvidia-drm.modeset=1 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

# GRUB boot loader configuration

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet nvidia-drm.modeset=1"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# Preload both GPT and MBR modules so that they are not missed
GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt part_msdos"

# Uncomment to enable booting from LUKS encrypted devices
#GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y

# Set to 'countdown' or 'hidden' to change timeout behavior,
# press ESC key to display menu.
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

# Uncomment to use basic console
GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT=console

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal
#GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
GRUB_GFXMODE=auto

# Uncomment to allow the kernel use the same resolution used by grub
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

# Uncomment if you want GRUB to pass to the Linux kernel the old parameter
# format "root=/dev/xxx" instead of "root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxx"
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

# Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries
GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY=true

# Uncomment and set to the desired menu colors. Used by normal and wallpaper
# modes only. Entries specified as foreground/background.
#GRUB_COLOR_NORMAL="light-blue/black"
#GRUB_COLOR_HIGHLIGHT="light-cyan/blue"

# Uncomment one of them for the gfx desired, a image background or a gfxtheme
#GRUB_BACKGROUND="/path/to/wallpaper"
#GRUB_THEME="/path/to/gfxtheme"

# Uncomment to get a beep at GRUB start
#GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1"

# Uncomment to make GRUB remember the last selection. This requires
# setting 'GRUB_DEFAULT=saved' above.
#GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

# Uncomment to disable submenus in boot menu
#GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=y

/etc/pacman.d/nvidia.hook :

peration=Install
Operation=Upgrade
Operation=Remove
Type=Package
Target=nvidia-dkms
Target=linux
# Change the linux part above and in the Exec line if a different kernel
is used

[Action]
Description=Update Nvidia module in initcpio
Depends=mkinitcpio
When=PostTransaction
NeedsTargets
Exec=/bin/sh -c 'while read -r trg; do case $trg in linux) exit 0; esac;
done; /usr/bin/mkinitcpio -P'

For the errors I had and the way I solved them (just by removing nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm from modules) I have no idea what the problem might be.

Also, do you think it would be a better idea to reinstall arch and choose the open source drivers? When I was using EndeavourOS the second monitor was recognized and now I don't think I could have messed up a lot by myself since I just used archinstall and choose the DE (awesomeWM) option already.

Re: Second screen not detected

reinstall arch and choose the open source drivers?

You'll most likely run into the same problem.

HOOKS=(base udev autodetect keyboard keymap modconf block filesystems fsc
k)

What's up w/ these line breaks. Make sure they're not in the file!

You can skip nvidia_uvm, but
1. just editing those files does nothing
2. what's the actual output of mkinicpio and grub-mkconfig (w/ the desired changes)?

Yes, they are definitively not there. I just copy paste them by accident. Sorry

Yes, they are definitively not there.

mkinitcpio disagrees…

Re: Second screen not detected

/boot is a 96MB vfat system on a 512MB partition.
And it's full and the size is extremely limiting considering that there's also an MS ESP …

umount /boot and then use https://man.archlinux.org/man/community … esize.1.en to grow it to the maximum size.
The mount /boot again and try to update initramfs and grub config.

for some reason it only has 100Mb because the archinstall only gave it 100Mb

Ah, forgot about that thing.
Explains many of the recent threads, though…

Ok, this solved the problem of the detected screen after some problems with resizing and stuff, however there's still a problem with dual monitor, which is, whenever I  try to pass an app's GUI (for example) from a window to another it just breaks my X and goes to the login screen. I don't know if I should open a new issue for that, but I guess it's somehow related.

Either way, my log is:
