video in browser and in vlc [SOLVED]

Hi,
when i watch some video on youtube, firefox or brave can take more than 50% of CPU. vlc for the same video is less than 6%. So my laptop do more sound when i read on the browser
I think that the browser don't use hardware decoder, but i tried to change that in firefox config or brave but it did not work.

Is there a way to change that or to force the browser to use vlc to read the video. Or better to embed vlc inside the browser to read video.

We'll need more information about your system first:

Check about:gpu and  glxinfo -B and "loginctl session-status"

Esp. check the used video codec as well ("same video" doesn't necessarily mean the same file/codec when youtube is involved, but you could also open the local file in your browser for comparism)

When i do

sudo intel_gpu_top

The Video part is at 0% so it means that no GPU is used to decode the video. Even with vlc playing the video, or brave or firefox. In all the case Video is at 0%.
But vlc use less than 9% of CPU and browser use more than 40%

Did you read the link seth posted? HW acceleration needs to explicitly be enabled in many scenarios in browsers currently

Yes but it doesn't work if i do

sudo vainfo

then i have this error

error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

I also change config on firefox but still the same

On this matter you're comparing apples and oranges.

1. The youtube video might use a different codec than your local file and eg. HEVC is far more expensive to decode than h264
2. There's more to a "youtube video" than just the video: javascript, the video overlays, live chats, google tracking you…

There is no local file. I'm watching a streaming file from youtube with vlc, or brave or firebox

Sure but i made a pause of the video, and the browser was at less than 1% CPU, so the overuse of the CPU is not done but that. I have 2 process on brave 59% and 30%  and only 6% on vlc.

Same codec is used, H264-MPEG-4 AVC1 in both case. For the CPU usage In firefox 80% and 47%, (2 threads) and vlc 5%

I even try a local file, Firefox 33% and VLC 6%

Depending on the resolution, vlc is probably *not* decoding that in SW at that CPU load.
Did you check the used decoder? (I don't care what intel_gpu_top says)

What SW means ? Software i guess. But as intel_gup_top says 0% on video it means GPU is not used to decode the stream.

How can we know which decoder is used ?

Visually image on vlc has a better quality (a few)

Yup.
I suggest to get your HW decoding config fixed (see link in #12) and live w/ the browser overhead (at a lower level)

If the browser overhead is still too much with hardware decoding, you can try one of the "Send to media player" addons to make calling vlc easier.

It needs to have nodeJS installed on my computer. And i think it is too heavy for this simple thing.

I installed intel-media-driver and now on VLC hardware decoding works

As it seems that there is a little of decoding with hardware on firefox (intel_gpu_top) i put this topic oon solved. But firefox still use far more CPU than vlc
