If you have a Vega GPU or APU it is just as bad atm. Major issues with those devices, they crash constantly under load. I just replaced my 3400G with a 3600 plus spare Nvidia 960 (as GPUs rarer than gold atm) and ran straight into this issue. Hoping to try the package downgrades. I love Linux but it needs a serious kick up the rear on graphics stability, does not help our case as a serious platform.

Good news from the nvidia forum:

I checked in and it looks like they managed to find one of the affected monitor models and there’s a fix in testing for a future release.

Let's hope that this future release isn't far away.

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia driver causes kernel panic

In case this can help others, this is how I tried to keep my system up-to-date while staying with the old nvidia drivers. It worked for me, but I cannot guarantee 100% it will work with all packages / configs. This nvidia issue has been going on for so long, it has been hard to hold on package updates for me...

If not already done, downgrade to some working nvidia driver (this has been already shared in this thread)

cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
pacman -U nvidia-460.67-7-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst nvidia-utils-460.67-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst nvidia-settings-460.67-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst opencl-nvidia-460.67-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst lib32-nvidia-utils-460.67-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst libxnvctrl-460.67-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

You also need to install the nvidia-dkms package

wget https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/n/nvidia-dkms/nvidia-dkms-460.67-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
pacman -U nvidia-dkms-460.67-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Run a system upgrade, ignoring all this nvidia stuff:

pacman -Syu --ignore=nvidia,nvidia-utils,nvidia-settings,opencl-nvidia,lib32-nvidia-utils,libxnvctrl,nvidia-dkms

The list could be added directly to pacman.conf as IngorePkg if you prefer not having to pass it to every pacman command.

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia driver causes kernel panic

After waiting for so long, the alleged fix is coming in the upcoming releases. Please let us know if anyone can confirm that the driver works now.

Great to hear. I shall update immediately when that version becomes available in the official repository.

So, we're just waiting on 470.42 which is currently in beta, to hit production. My HDMI cables went bad, I upgraded monitors and went with display port; I'm not wasting money on a HDMI cable.

Only Arch Linux has this problem. I have Fedora 34 and it, nor any other of my Linux systems hit this snag. I'll be happy when this is resolved. This is also why I multi-boot.

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia driver causes kernel panic

The interim mitigation is to downgrade to 460xx (which you're probably running on other distros)
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1968236

470.42 is the current beta driver, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-beta/
I doubt that it'll enter the repos but some 47xyy release will

This has been reported as affecting both Fedora and Ubuntu, as well as Arch and Manjaro. I presume you're not actually using the nvidia driver on Fedora, since it ships with Nouveau by default.

Yes, I downgraded the kernel and driver. My fans work but, I test conkys and conkys display really weird using the work around.
A 400 pixel wide conky is 800 pixels wide on Arch. You can't adjust it because it works; just not on Arch.

I have a GTX 980 Ti, not the latest but, still nice.
On Fedora, the production Nvidia driver is currently 465.31 which comes from the RPM Fusion repo and I have not had any problem at all.
I also have Xubuntu 21.04 and it has never had a problem.

My situation is that only Arch has this problem. Arch updates to the latest on my system without any kernel panic. The only thing is the GPU fans don't come on and Nvidia settings do not work
I have conky display GPU temp, etc. and noticed 65C. Found this thread and still patiently awaiting 470.42 to hit production.

I want my life back. smile

@Cavsfan you will use the nvidia packages from RPM Fusion but not the nvidia-beta packages for AUR?

"My fans don't work" is rather not the bug discussed in this thread and the second line is kinda unparsable gibberish to anyone not in fron of your system.

Open a new thread, post the xorg log w/ the downgraded driver, the conky config you use and maybe a link to a conky screenshot.

The only thing is the GPU fans don't come on and Nvidia settings do not work

Also post the complete system journal and xorg log for the 465xx driver situation, because that sounds a lot like you're not using the nvidia driver at all.

But again: this is a different problem for a different thread.
You can also report your first post for a mod to split off the subthread.

The RPM Fusion free and non-free repos are Fedora system repos.

No, the fans not running is a symptom of the same problem; the nvidia driver will not work properly with the kernel for the past 2 months or whatever.

I believe everyone with an Nvidia card has to install the driver, enable 4 bits or whatever your system needs and then run this startup script to enable and start the fans at 50%.

!/bin/sh
nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUFanControlState=1
nvidia-settings -a [fan:0]/GPUTargetFanSpeed=50

exit 0

Or else your Nvidia card will sit there and fry.

That script does not work like it did prior to this bug and the need for the work around. My Nvidia Settings GUI is unusable.
The fact that I need the work around packages for my Nvidia fans to run is proof my problem is related to this bug.

When the bug fix (driver 470.42) hits production and this thread is marked solved, I will be able to update my system as well as everyone else.

The RPM Fusion free and non-free repos are Fedora system repos.

Unofficial_user_repositories#archlinuxcn is a signed unofficial repository similar to RPM Fusion and it contains nvidia-btea and nvidia-utils beta.

No,  not all systems with Nvidia GPU's using the nvidia driver were affected by kernel panic or problems with fan operation.  I have not experienced either on this system.

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia driver causes kernel panic

Do you get the kernel module crashes?
Is it neatly tied to using a displayport output?
Did you test the 470xx beta driver and does that prevent yoru problem?

If not, there's no reason to believe that this is the same problem or that it'll be fixed w/ the 470xx beta or the upcoming stable driver.

I just updated and while the nvidia-settings GUI works and the fans were enabled, the fans do not turn on.

Time to open my own thread. Oddly enough they did run with the work around packages installed.
