intel g33/g31 graphics and vídeo acceleration

Hello, i recently got and old pc, is an hp pavillion slim line, it comes with integrated graphics intel g33/g31 incorporated. lspci -k shows:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express DRAM Controller (rev 10)
  Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2a78
  Kernel modules: intel_agp
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10)
  Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2a78
  Kernel driver in use: i915
  Kernel modules: i915

I installed xf86-video-intel, mesa, and libvdpau-va-gl.

On /etc/profile i add

export VDPAU_DRIVER=va_gl

And that is my setup. My question is. Im good and done with that, or i miss something, are this packages the correct ones for that intel old graphics?

mesa-vdpau will work?

Re: intel g33/g31 graphics and vídeo acceleration

The primary acceleration method for intel graphics is vaapi which is what you want and need to set up. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hardwa … tion#Intel VDPAU is not natively (... or via mesa-vdpau) supported which is why you do the va_gl override, but most software will have native vaapi support so this doesn't really factor in much

... But this is such an old graphics card it's not going to support accelerated decoding and even if it would, not the kind of formats that are commonly in use today.

Re: intel g33/g31 graphics and vídeo acceleration

Thank u for your reply, following ur words i  understand like for this old graphics, i only need xf86-video-intel and mesa.

Like u said most software have native vaapi support. So i uninstalled mesa-vdpau and libvdpau-va-gl and remove export VDPAU_DRIVER=va_gl from /etc/profile and i can still:

Play retroarch ( nes snes ps1 n64 nDS, gba, and psp ) thats the consoles i always play.

Play youtube videos in firefox 720/60 and 1080p, not 1080/60 its to laggy

Screenrecord i just test playing retroarch ps1 and record fine with simplescreenrecorder.

Playing mpv movies with config options:
vo=gpu
opengl-es=yes

I can play movies with vo=x11 but depuration logs said its oldie :s

Thats the only stuff i do in this pc so i think im done.

Re: intel g33/g31 graphics and vídeo acceleration

it looks like there is no VAAPI decoder for your GPU available if the gentoo wiki is not lying (Gen3): https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel#Feature_support
Even if there was, the only thing possible would be mpeg2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I … generation

For better opengl support see here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … 915_driver
