Claws Mail 4.0: scaling too large

With the update of Claws Mail to 4.0, the scaling is too large, so I cannot see the message body pane anymore. Since the update from 3.18 to 4.0 changed GTK from 2 to 3: How to I set a scaling factor of 0.5 for claws-mail?

export GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.5
export GDK_SCALE=0.5

did not change the scaling for me.
